But without that roguish criminal culture, the Star Wars
universe would lose much of its color. It would be left with
only the bleak monochrome of the Republic and Imperial militaries
and the tired tri-color blades of the Jedi and Sith Orders.
Bounty hunters have always been the group to keep everything
off-balance, mysterious, and interesting. Take the Fetts
for example. Boba Fett (pre-2002 of course) said 3-4 lines,
had a single abbreviated fight scene, and somehow became
a fan-favorite character. Jango Fett turns out to be the
progenitor of what eventually became the Imperial Stormtrooper
and was the basis for the entire clone population in the
Clone Wars.
Cartoon Network’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars kept bounty
hunters out of the mix for all but the last episode of the
first season, and their absence was noticeable. There was
a sense of danger and adventure missing in the show. Season
2 promises to remedy that absence by bringing the hunters
in full-force and with a brand-new character to spearhead
the threat: the Duros bounty hunter Cad Bane.
Given the relative ease with which film and television characters
can catch on to younger audiences in today’s world,
Bane will likely become the character to watch and “love
to hate” on The Clone Wars—as long as there’s
enough of the right marketing thrown behind him. Part of
that marketing is the inevitable children’s toy, and
today’s review examines Hasbro’s action figure
incarnation of Cad Bane.

For all those MMORPG fans out there, LucasArts
have been slowly revealing the classes for it's up-coming
MMORPG title, Star Wars: The Old Republic. As if the
developers have become sadistic game show hosts, rumour
and hearsay has become the order of the day when trying
to guess what is to come next in regards to class content.
So far we have been told to anxiously await the chance
to play a: Bounty Hunter, Smuggler and Trooper. Now I
have the honour, nay, the privilege to tell you that
the fourth class is to be the "Sith Warrior".
So why should you care? Well of course, any fan of the Star Wars
franchise will tell you that, although fundamentally wrong, the Sith
are the coolest, most bad-ass guys around the space town. Now we
are given the chance to play one and most excitingly, in the context
of a promising game rather than more disappointing titles, Force
Unleashed anyone?
" Though the lightsaber is the Warrior's primary method of attack, he also
uses his dark command of the Force to paralyze, terrify, and kill," says
LucasArts. "Protected by heavy armor and his powers of intimidation, the
Warrior wades into the thick of the fight and unleashes pure hatred and fury
to eliminate all who would stand against him."

A new single-player level for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
is available today for Xbox 360 owners through Xbox LIVE
Marketplace and for PlayStation 3 owners through the PlayStation
Network. The level features the "Secret Apprentice" in
an entirely new mission that continues the story of The
Force Unleashed in a new "Infinities" storyline
that takes the Star Wars Saga in an entirely new and unexpected
direction.
The mission begins at the end of the story
of The Force Unleashed and re-imagines the Star Wars Saga
as if the Secret Apprentice had killed Darth Vader and
taken his place at the Emperor's side, becoming the most
powerful Sith Lord in the universe. The story picks up
as the Emperor sends his new apprentice to the planet Tatooine
to dispatch Obi-Wan Kenobi -- who has been hiding on the
planet ever since the events of Star Wars: Episode III
Revenge of the Sith. During their hunt for the reclusive
Jedi, players will also explore the depths of Jabba the
Hutt's palace and encounter notorious bounty hunter Boba
Fett.

In television and movies, the past few years can tentatively
be called the Age of The Reboot. Recently on the television
side, we have had reboots on Battlestar Galactica, V, and
Knight Rider, among others. And on the movie side, Hollywood
just went wild: Star Trek, Batman, Superman, Halloween,
Friday The 13th, and on and on and on.
Are the movie moguls having a hard time with coming up
with new scripts? Or are reboots a boon, as they play into
the nostalgia gene of the 70’s generation as we move
into our late 30’s and early 40’s?
Personally, I am a big fan of the Star Wars Expanded
Universe (EU). I’ve read almost all of the novels
and series that followed the adventures of the those beloved
heroes and new dastardly villains after the destruction
of the second Death Star in Return of the Jedi. These include
the X-Wing series, the Thrawn trilogy, the New Jedi Order
series, Dark Nest, and Legacy of the Force. I’m currently
working my way through Fate of the Jedi, anticipating each
release like an addled crack fiend.
Just within the Star Wars EU, I can see a lot of potential
for new TV series and / or new movies. Many of us are anxiously
anticipating the new live-action Star Wars TV show. But,
just for a day (okay maybe 20 years), I’d like to
be an entertainment mega-god with the power to summon IP
rights to any of the above story lines. But then I’d
have some tough choices to make.

You may recall the scene in The Empire Strikes Back (still
my favorite Star Wars film), where Luke lost part of his
arm in a duel with Darth Vader -- only to have it later
replaced with a cool prosthetic. Ah, Hollywood.
But you may not know that the federal government's Defense
Advanced Research Projects Agency (aka DARPA) has been
funding the real-life development of next-generation prosthetics
that one day will make the Luke arm a reality. Ah, DARPA.
What's cool about this project is that part of it is
being developed right here in Maryland, at the Johns Hopkins
Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel (of course it is.)
An article today in TechNewsWorld recaps the progress of
the project, quoting Stuart Harshbarger, biomedicine team
leader at Hopkins's APL and project manager for the DARPA
effort.

There’s a great scene in the Cartoon
Network original Star Wars Clone Wars series where Arc
Troopers, pinned down and badly needing a fresher perspective,
take a spherical probe droid camera and toss it high
in the air. The camera gives the troopers a birds eye
view of the entire city around them, spotting enemy positions
and giving them great advantage when attacking. Well,
someone must be a Star Wars geek because Uncle Sam and
Remington Technologies have created the Eye Ball R1 Throwable
Camera System.
It can’t float high in the year,
yet, but this compact, lightweight, spherical camera
is designed for high risk tactical situations for military
and law enforcement to get a vital viewpoint of what’s
going on where they can’t see.
I'll come right out and say it: Star Wars
has a badly-designed universe; so poorly-designed, in
fact, that one can say that a significant goal of all
those Star Wars novels is to rationalize and mitigate
the bad design choices of the movies. Need examples?
Here's ten.
R2-D2
Sure, he's cute, but the flaws in his design are obvious the first
time he approaches anything but the shallowest of stairs. Also:
He has jets, a periscope, a taser and oil canisters to make enforcer
droids fall about in slapsticky fashion -- and no voice synthesizer.
Imagine that design conversation: "Yes, we can afford slapstick
oil and tasers, but we'll never get a 30-cent voice chip past
accounting. That's just madness."
C-3PO
Can't fully extend his arms; has a bunch of exposed wiring in his
abs; walks and runs as if he has the droid equivalent of arthritis.
And you say, well, he was put together by an eight-year-old. Yes,
but a trip to the nearest Radio Shack would fix that. Also, I'm still
waiting to hear the rationale for making a protocol droid a shrieking
coward, aside from George Lucas rummaging through a box of offensive
stereotypes (which he'd later return to while building Jar-Jar Binks)
and picking out the "mincing gay man" module.

I want to make
you aware of the GameCon event witch is taking place Koln

Heroes promotion campaign contained a true flying Clone
Trooper! Go check out both the pictures and video I found

"Star Wars" creator
George Lucas will make his first trip to the Venice Film
Festival to present the Golden Lion award for lifetime
achievement to John Lasseter and the directors of Disney-Pixar,
festival organizers said Thursday.
The presentation, which will take place September 6 in
the Palazzo del Cinema's Sala Grande, will be held in conjunction
with screenings of new 3D version of "Toy Story" and "Toy
Story 2." Lasseter directed both films. The evening
also will include the premiere of a 10-minute clip from "The
Princess and the Frog," Disney's return to hand-drawn
animation, and the screening of a new sequence from the
in-production project "Toy Story 3."
A day later, Lasseter and Disney-Pixar's Brad Bird, Peter
Docter, Andrew Stanton and Lee Unrich will host a two-session
master class, with one session reserved for young European
animators.
Though the trip will be the first to the Venice festival
for Lucas, the fest was the platform for the European release
of two of the films in his "Star Wars" series:
1980's "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return
of the Jedi" in 1983.
The 66th edition of the Venice Festival opens September
2 and runs through September 12.

Hasbro Star Wars Q&A!
Check out the next Yodasnews Hasbro Q&A below!
YN: The AT-TE, BMF, Turbo Tank, and the new G.I. Joe
PIT are all examples of massive multi-tiered playsets contained
within a vehicle. Can we expect to see this trend continue
at least once per year (as long as sales support the investment)?
If so, does this leave the door open for playset vehicles
such as the Executor, the Imperial Star Destroyer, and
the Republic Venator-class cruiser?
Hasbro: As long as sales continue to do well, we would
like to see this strategy continue for Star Wars (we can't
speak for the strategy of other brands). However, we doubt
that the giant imperial ships will be part of any large-vehicle
plan. They are not the most interesting vehicles themselves.
Even though we would love to see them someday, we're sure
there are a good number of candidates ahead of them.
YN: With the unveiling of Concept Anakin Skywalker (Episode
III) and Concept Ki-Adi Mundi, it seems clear that Hasbro
plans to expand beyond the McQuarrie designs and delve
into a larger arena of concept art-based products. Can
we expect this to eventually include vehicles as well similar
to what we saw back in the "Power of the Force 2" era?
Hasbro: There are no plans to expand beyond figures right
now, simply because the tooling would be too great for
a non-core vehicle. The exception would be if a concept
vehicle could be done with little change to an existing
vehicle, then it might be possible.
YN: Considering Master Replicas spent years telling collectors
that they couldn't figure out a reliable way to build Force
FX sabers with curved hilts (Dooku and Ventress), it was
a very welcome surprise to see both of them as your first
new entries in the Hasbro Signature Series Force FX line.
Were these developed solely in-house and can we expect
to see even more innovative higher-end products from Hasbro's
Star Wars brand in the future?
Hasbro: They were developed in-house and represent the
first of the new-designs we have planned. Stay tuned!

The long-rumored
Star Wars live action series is reportedly coming together
quickly and will begin shooting before 2009 ends.
You can pick any one of many collected reports, but they
all say the show is well past the planning stages and is
only waiting on completed scripts before George Lucas begins
casting the essential roles.
While news of Star Wars on TV might have generated a
bored groan from viewers after the prequel movies came
and went, the critical and ratings success of Cartoon Network's
The Clone Wars shows that a galaxy far, far away can work
on TV if the writers, directors and cast remember that
this is all supposed to be fun -- not high drama of a deeply
spiritual nature.
What do we know about the new series? It will take place
in the long years after Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
and before Episode IV: A New Hope, and document the early
struggles of the fledgling rebellion against the Galactic
Empire. Classic characters Obi-Wan Kenobi and Boba Fett
(right) will play a part, but Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine
won't. It's set for production in Prague -- not in Australia,
as once rumored.
What don't we know? As I said, casting is wide open at
this point. Could other classic characters like Yoda, Chewbacca,
C3PO and R2D2 appear? It's unclear if George Lucas will
write or direct any portion of the show himself. There's
no mention of how many episodes will be produced or where
it might air.
We also don't know if it'll
be any good. But I'm willing to wager millions will tune
in to find out.

Star Wars is
full of light and fun moments, rousing action and fantastic

adult themes including death, murder, torture and even
infanticide.

Gentle
Giant Collectors Price Guides August Update!
The GentleGiantCollector.com
Price Guides have been updated for the month of August
2009. There has been a decent amount of fluctuation from
the last update. There have been some great deals on
many items for those that have been keeping a watch on
the secondary market! On the other hand, some of the
harder to find items (even from retired lines) are holding
their value or increasing it.
For readers not familiar with our guides,
we process them manually to ensure they are accurate. The
Price Guide team looks at completed ebay auctions, ebay
stores, online retailers who sell in the secondary market,
yahoo auctions, popular message board sale sections, as
well as other places on the web to determine the true value
of each piece on the secondary market.
It is both a useful tool if you are looking
to fill a hole in your collection, or if you have the misfortune
of having to part with one of your pieces and need to have
an idea what you can expect it to sell for. Our very popular
Image Guides are also integrated into the section.
The three classic
SNES Super Star Wars games are going to be released on
the Virtual Console of the Wii over the next few weeks.
Starting today the original Super Star Wars was released
and in the coming weeks, Super Empire Strikes Back and
Super Return of the Jedi will also be released.
The Super Star Wars Trilogy
will be available for download on the Virtual Console for
800 Nintendo Points each. In other words each game is $8.
All three of the games were great on the old SNES and are
worth a look at if you like Star Wars.

Robot
Chicken Roller Skating Tour Hits Philly!
Adult Swim and Robot Chicken creators and executive
producers Seth Green and Matt Senreich are celebrating the
release of the Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II DVD this
summer by strapping on a pair of roller skates and living
on a tour bus for two weeks just to bring Robot Chicken-style
fun to the masses. Green and Senreich host the celebration
throughout the nine-city roller rink tour across America.
We met up with the tour at Jamz Roller Skating
in Philadelphia last night and wanted to share a few pictures
with our readers. If you are in New York on the 14th be sure
to check out the final show of this tour! Philly was a GREAT
time and it's FREE (but we advise bringing your DVD to get
in an hour early as space is limited and not everyone gets
in).

Star
Wars Games Head To Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console!
Star Wars and Nintendo have a lot in common
-- both are lovable, but often dismissed as "childish" by
some members of their would-be fan bases. Over the next
month, Star Wars and Nintendo will smash together in
a planet-size explosion of gaming awesomeness, though.
Today, Super Star Wars, that Super Nintendo
standby, is available for download, and in the coming
weeks, both Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
and Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi will be added
to the Virtual Console lineup. All three Super Star Wars
games were originally released for the Super Nintendo
Entertainment System and will be available at 800 Wii
Points each.
Old games never die; they're just eventually
reborn as downloadable content. But the question is:
Is Nintendo and the other game companies making the right
choices with the games they revive? These Star Wars titles
were, like most movie tie-in games, not particularly
great. The main selling point (if I remember correctly)
were the graphics, and obviously that doesn't matter
any more. Play-wise, I remember these games as being
frustratingly difficult and not all that fun...except
the third one, which was pretty good.

A
Closer Look at The Making of The Empire Strikes Back!
While you may have caught a glimpse of
this upcoming book in our Comic-Con coverage a couple
weeks ago, we've now got a clean cover image of The Making
of The Empire Strikes Back by Lucasfilm's J.W. Rinzler
to share.
We're able to report that early passes of this book
are absolutely brimming with never-before-published photos,
and the length matches that of the deluxe Star Wars edition
printed two years ago -- 372 pages. Foreword by Alien/Blade
Runner/Gladiator director Ridley Scott.
The Making of the Empire Strikes Back will be available
in 2010 and is being published by Del Rey Books. Stay
tuned to starwars.com for further reports of this highly-anticipated
book to be released for Empire's 30th anniversary...

Invades Chicago Comic Con!
August in Chicago brought the heat, the
humidity and Wizard World 2009 (now coined Chicago Comic
Con), one of the best comic conventions we've seen in Chicago
in years. All the elements of a great convention were there
including a powerful celebrity guest list and hundreds
of people dressed in their favorite movie and comic book
characters. The celebrities of Star Wars were in full force
including Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), Jeremy Bulloch (Boba
Fett), Billy Dee Williams (Lando), Ray Park (Darth Maul),
Daniel Logan (young Boba Fett), and many other actors who
lent their acting skills to Lucas' saga.
I even had the pleasure of meeting Steve
Sansweet and grabbed a photo with him. Other guests included
Christopher Knight, Todd Bridges, Margot Kidder, Buck Rogers'
Gil Gerard and Erin Gray, Baywatch's Erika Eleniak and
Donna D'Errico, Wresting stars Roddy Piper, Greg Valentine,
Ted DiBaise, Luke Bushwhacker, Honky Tonk Man and Demolition!
It was great to see all these celebrities gathered in once
place and be able to meet them and snap a few photos of
the people we all grew up on television and the big screen.
I'm looking forward to next year's show and hope the guests
will be as strong as ever.

Star Wars, an idea that is now thirty
years old, gives brands much to learn in how they consider
their future in a digital, conversation driven world.
Star Wars is a platform. A story told over 25 years,
six movies, a cartoon series, innumerable video games,
plastic toys, and a sea of licensed novels.
The genius of George Lucas is the way in which this
platform he established allows others to imagine and
build upon his original ideas. Everyone knows that the
force exists--and roughly what it can do. Everyone knows
that faster than light travel is possible. Everyone knows
there is the "Empire" and the "Rebel Alliance," and
everyone knows that Leia is Luke's sister. In a Star
Wars Universe, the force would never disappear in the
same way that Luke would never sleep with Leia.
Here is a quick update from www.bigbadtoystore.com about
a wide variety of new arrivals and some top-notch new preorders!

A friend of mine I went to high school with recently
found out her 3 year old daughter has Cancer. Her name
is Maddie and she is just adorable. It breaks my heart
to see anyone, especially young children have to suffer
through chemo treatments and long hospital stays. The parents
( Kelly & Ray ) are having a hard time making ends
meet. Kelly has depleted her leave and is not drawing a
salary. The ambulance ride alone was more than $3K, which
is not covered by health insurance.
They are having a benefit at the Taberg Legion ( Taberg,
New York ) on September 12th for Maddie. If there is ANYTHING
you could donate for the raffles, that would be wonderful.
There's also an online journal the mother is keeping
right here at CaringBridge.org, login to read about her
progress. The family loves Star Wars and their oldest son
Wyatt loves the new Clone Wars cartoon! If you can help
please take 5-10 minutes to send in a donation, anything
and everything will be greatly appreciated.
Please mail donations to: MAHER, 4245 WILSON RD

Star
Wars Fans’ Choice Poll 2009 Reminder!
Another Comic Con has come and gone, and
Hasbro has told the fans what they have in store for us.
Now it’s our turn again to tell Hasbro what WE want
to see!
In conjunction with ToyFare magazine, Hasbro is conducting
another Star Wars Fans’ Choice poll. This time, the
poll will nominate the top 30 most wanted figures in honor
of Episode V’s 30th anniversary (has it really been
30 years?!). As expected, the poll will recognize figures
from all corners of the Star Wars universe—films,
television, comics, etc.
The top choice will be released as the next “Fans’ Choice” figure
(subject to approval by Lucasfilm and Hasbro). If it is
a Clone Wars selection, the figure will be sculpted in
the animated style. All others will be done in the “realistic
style”.
All websites who regularly participate in the Star Wars
Q&A are invited to submit a ranked and prioritized
list of 30 figures. The deadline for submission is August
24th, and voting will begin in ToyFare #148.
Here at Yodasnews, we will be compiling lists and voting
in our forums. Click
here or image below to take part in the Hasbro Star
Wars Fans’ Choice poll.

The movies on this list are a good indicator
of just how diverse the science fiction genre is. From
the epic philosophical ideas of 2001: A Space Odyssey
and Solaris to the joyful space opera of Star Wars and
Flash Gordon, the films here are linked by their ability
to explore time and space with imagination, flair and
audacity....
... Star Wars -
Iconic, spectacular, groundbreaking, epic in both scope
and ambition - if you haven’t seen Star Wars then,
well, you’re probably not interested in reading
a list about SF movies. While it might not convey the
big science fiction ideas of other movies on this list,
Star Wars works because it is pure, escapist fun and
because it successfully builds a believable, cohesive
galaxy that we are still exploring to this day.

addition to the 501st Legion uniting Star Wars fans worldwide,
it also likes to recognize those people who contribute
their time and talents to the Star Wars community in special
way. These people who support of the 501st and Star Wars
fandom are called “Friends of the 501st Legion.”
During San Diego Comic-Con International 2009, one
such person was recognized by the Southern California
Garrison
for his continual support of the 501st Legion as well as
for his undying love for all things Star Wars — Heroes
actor Milo Ventimiglia.
Already well-known as a hardcore Star Wars fan as well
as a fan of the 501st, Milo also supports real-life troops
fighting overseas by working with the military veterans
organization Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA).
Southern California Garrison XO Lesley Farquhar, who
sponsored Milo’s induction, had this to say about
their newest Friend of the 501st...
We just added a new Pre-Order for the Gentle Giant Star
Wars Princess Leia Mynock Hunt Mini Bust
(
A Diamond Previews Exclusive.)
Leia wears the insulated snowsuit she needed in the harsh,
icy climate of Hoth, in a traditional Alderaanian white
in memory of her lost homeworld. She also wears a breathing
mask, needed in the depths of the asteroid where she, Chewbacca,
and Han Solo hunted the mynocks that bedeviled them as
they sought to repair the Millennium Falcon after its confrontation
with the Imperial Fleet.

Wattographs
Presents Two RARE Autograph Signings!
Wattographs is proud to announce
two, first-time autograph signers for August. Both actors have
NEVER before been available for private autograph opportunities
until this signing!
Koo Stark played Camie, Fixer's girlfriend in the famous
deleted Anchorhead/Toshi Station scenes in Star Wars "A
New Hope." While few fans have ever seen the 'lost'
movie scenes, they have been they have also been featured
in the film novel, the original Marvel comics and in the
expanded universe. Koo has been a notoriously reclusive personality,
especially with regard to autographs and she's been on a
great number of fans' 'want lists' for years. This is indeed
a RARE signing with Ms. Stark who will be signing official
photographs and fans' personal items!
John Fensom played protocol droid TC-14 in Episode I: The
Phantom Menace. Fensom learned the 'droid walk' pioneered
by Anthony Daniels for C-3PO. While TC-14 obliged her demanding
Viceroy, she was destroyed when Anakin Skywaker blew up the
droid control ship in the Naboo Space battle. Mr. Fensom
will be signing official photographs and fans' personal items!
Signing ends August 31st at 11:59:59 EDT. Personal items
need to be in Wattographs' possession by that date. Please
visit Wattographs for complete signing information.
Sith Lords of the rhymes are back in the house!
Palpatine, Vader, and their fly Stormtroopers are busting an
Empire Gangsta Rap of hurt! Sit back and enjoy this sneak peek
clip that was shown at Comic-Con 2009. Full version is coming
soon to Atom.com:

The latest Star Wars offering from LEGO Co
is the Home One Mon Calamari Star Cruiser (7754), which is
the very first Fan's Choice set ever. In 2007 it was picked
as the winner in an online poll conducted by LEGO Co and
Toys "R" Us, with whom it is exclusively available
through (as well as LEGO brand stores and the website). In
2009 it joined the LEGO Star Wars line to mark the 10th anniversary
of the license.
Anyone who regularly builds LEGO sets will tell you that
sorting out all the pieces before you start is a task they'd
prefer to avoid, but inside the Home One box you will find
numbered bags full of bricks that make sorting the pieces
short work. A quick flip through the two instruction books
will show you that the build is broken down into three sections
and as soon as you've picked out the three or four bags that
go with each phase you are ready to begin.
