The Force, it seems, was with Electronic Arts Inc. this week when the company launched its most ambitious game ever, Star Wars: The Old Republic.

The Redwood City, Calif., game publisher said Friday that more than 1 million players have bought the game and jumped online to play since its release to a small group of customers Dec. 13 and to the wider public last Tuesday. Each player spent an average of five hours a day playing the game, according to EA.

While Google were pioneers in speech recognition technology on their Android platform, Apple’s Siri for iOS has been the real star of listening, virtual assistants of 2011. Siri’s natural language processing has given Apple the edge for the time being, but Google aims to change that in the near future, albeit with a slightly different approach.

In this Slashgear interview with Matias Duarte, Google’s Director of Android OS User Experience, he describes Google’s more cut-and-dry approach to speech recognition with a metaphor I think you will all understand:

“If [Siri]’s Star Wars, you have these robot personalities like C-3PO who runs around and he tries to do stuff for you, messes up and makes jokes, he’s kind of a comic relief guy. Our approach is more like Star Trek, right, starship Enterprise; every piece of computing surface, everything is voice-aware. It’s not that there’s a personality, it doesn’t have a name, it’s just “Computer.”

And 2 different managers at Target gave me a wink wink indication that big clearences were going to happen overnight tonight in the toy dept! Star Wars Galaxies shut down yesterday with the ending of a licensing contract between Lucasfilm and Sony. Luckily, Star Wars: The Old Republic had a soft open a few days ago, with a mass release in a few days! Several players on Twitter and Facebook reported deployments of X-Wing fighters and Fireworks like in Return of the Jedi as the severs shut down for good.

Donovan is an 8 year old boy (9 this January) who has been diagnosed with ADHD, Bipolar Disorder and Aspergers Syndrome. Everyday Donovan has to deal with people who don't understand him while coping with his disabilities and fighting the anger inside of him. He has to go to a specialized school because the mainstream public schools couldn't accommodate his special needs.

Donovan loves building things, bicycling, archery, turtles and Star Wars. Star Wars has been a great teaching tool for him in dealing with his Bipolar meltdowns. Click here for more information.

Back in August we covered the press release from NZ Mint about the legal tender Star Wars coins being produced for Niue. They are now starting to be distributed and, because they are made locally, we've got a couple in hand and are able to share photos.

Close inspection reveals a few aspects not immediately evident in the early promotional images. The coins ship shrink-wrapped to a cardboard backer. The backing cards are specific to the character on the coin, with a brief bio listed along with the descriptive details of the coin (weight, size, uncirculated condition etc) and an edition number (out of the 50,000 issued per design). The feature face of the coin portrays an original trilogy hero or villain in full colour - the character sculpt is actually recessed and subtly embossed (more noticable with some characters than others). The obverse side of the coin exhibits Raphael Maklouf's portrait of the Queen Elizabeth II.

If confirmed next week, this will be the biggest news in the history of physics since the birth of the Theory of Relativity: CERN scientists may have already found evidence of the existence of the elusive Higgs boson. THE FORCE, dudes.

A respected scientist from the Cern particle physics laboratory has told the BBC he expects to see "the first glimpse" of the Higgs boson next week.

That would be next Tuesday, when two Large Hadron Collider teams would reveal the results of their research, highlighting ten candidates that show evidence of Higgs. Those ten candidates were found from the remains of about 350 trillion collisions using the ATLAS and CMS detectors.

According to most physicists, there's a Higgs field that is everywhere. The elusive Higgs particle would be the carrier of that field, interacting with all the other particles, "sort of the way a Jedi knight in Star Wars is the carrier of the "force", as National Geographic eloquently put it when the Large Hadron Collider was being built. Or like Obi Wan said, "the Force surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together."

You asked us and we asked Hasbro, check out the latest round of Questions and Answers we sent along to Hasbro:

YN: In November's Q&A, you stated that there will be nineteen figures in "total" coming in 2012. I'm pretty sure that I know what "total" means, but I really want to make sure by asking this: does this mean that every basic figure we see is going to be one of those nineteen figures, or will there be a chance that we will also see "filler" figures from previous waves (from 2011), such as Commander Colt, or season three Ahsoka Tano?

H: There are a total of 19 single carded Clone Wars Figures planned for 2012. Just over half have new tooling. Every single carded Clone Wars figure will be one of the nineteen.

YN: Is there any chance that we will see any more action figure ships from Episode II. There are a lot of possible ships that could be made such as Count Dooku's solar sailor. Also, I'm wondering if we will see any of the beasts in the arena scene of Episode II released in figure packs.

H: We are considering additional Episode II vehicles after 2012.

It's that time of year again, and Lucasfilm's partners and associates will soon be receiving a special holiday greeting from their friends at Lucasfilm!

"For this year's holiday card, we depicted Jabba the Hutt as a snowman who melts away from Lucasfilm's warm wishes," says ILM Art Department designer Devon Cutler. "This lighthearted and whimsical approach to Jabba was a fresh take on a bad guy. We used a white shimmery foil on a thick white paper stock and subtle emboss details on the hat, eyes, mouth and hands to add a bit of sophistication."

It's terribly nice of BioWare to provide us with some appropriate music as we careen headlong towards the last big game release of 2011. Fans eager for some orchestral magic can head over to the Star Wars: The Old Republic Facebook page, where two tracks — "Mandalorian Blockade" and "Korriban, The Homeworld" are already available for your listening and downloading pleasure. Then tune in each day for another track, at least until December 20, when you'll probably be busy with other things.

Note that these tracks are completely separate from ones included on the Collector's Edition soundtrack, so you'll have to wait until someone rips those and tosses them up on the internet for that particular CE benefit to be devalued.

Vote Up Photos on Crave

Now you can vote photos up on Crave! With this new feature you will be able to see which product photos are the most popular. Furthermore, this feature will reorganize the product photo galleries to display images in the order of most votes AND the photo with the most votes will be displayed as the official product image. To vote a photo up just click “Like” while viewing the image in the Fan Photo gallery. So get out there and start up voting your favorite photos!

The Comment Stream on the Main Page is Back

We listened to your feedback and have changed our new comment system to behave more like the old one. Now comments, price votes, and photo votes will all show in the Star Wars Marketplace main feed in the order that they are posted. Furthermore, unlike the old comment system, the new one is still integrated with Facebook so you can continue to share your Crave activity with your FB friends (but only if you want!).
