Empire
30th Anniversary Artwork Collection #11 by Alex Pardee
Part of StarWarsShop.com's
year-long celebration of The Empire Strikes Back's 30th
anniversary is this exclusive new artist series featuring work
from some of today's most well-known Star Wars illustrators.
Every month starting in March 2010, StarWarsShop
will release one new limited edition Acme Archives print showcasing
a memorable scene from The Empire Strikes Back in serial order
-- that is, each new scene will be released in story order as
it appeared in the film. What makes this serialized set unique,
however, is that each of the 12 scenes will showcase the talents
of an artist who brings his or her own individual style to the
piece, making for a wonderfully diverse portfolio of artwork inspired
by The Empire Strikes Back.
For the series' eleventh entry, "The Force, The Fall &
The Father", artist Alex Pardee has given one of the saga's
most iconic scenes his own signature touch. Pardee, who had a
previous Star Wars entry for the Vader Project a couple years
ago, has recently registered a giant blip on pop-culture's radar
with a series of poster illustrations for the upcoming Zach Snyder
film, Sucker Punch.
Don't forget you can get entered to win one of two Hasbro Super
Deluxe Imperial AT AT Walker Vehicles thanks to Razorsedgecollectibles.net!

Star Wars fan rejoice, for this typography design of Darth
Vader captures the famous face and words of this favorite misunderstood
Star Wars villain.
Designed by Evan Travelstead for an advanced type and design
project, the portrait of this dark enemy truly captures the terror
that Vader struck into the hearts of his underlings as well as those
fighting against him. The varied gradient of white and grays give
the image a sense of shading and really bring out the key features
of the Vader helmet like the gas mask, conical for of the helmet
and the raised ridge above the eye to appear more intimidating.
When it comes to the comic book side of the Star Wars expanded
universe, Dark Horse Comics has made a name for itself as the home
of original, creative tales that enrich the franchise and build
on existing mythology in the most fan-friendly ways.
Last year, we brought you the exclusive announcement of "Star
Wars: Knight Errant," another addition to the publisher's long
list of ongoing and limited Star Wars series. Today, we bring you
the exclusive news of a brand new title hitting shelves in May:
"Star Wars: Jedi - The Dark Side."
Featuring a story by Scott Allie and art by Mahmud Asrar (interior/cover)
and Stéphane Roux (variant cover), "The Dark Side"
follows Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn (played by Liam Neeson in "Star
Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace") as he's dispatched to
prevent a civil war on the homeworld of Xanatos, the Padawan he
trained before Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Showcasing the future Imperial emperor in his true form,
Sideshow Collectibles' Darth Sidious Legendary Scale Bust is a
must-own for Star Wars fans! Pre-Order this Dark Side collectible
using a full payment or FLEXPay choices below!
Be sure to join us for a special 'Star Wars' edition of Film,
Food and Figure Friday on February 4th, from 9AM to 6PM (Pacific
Time)! When you enter this month's movie-themed contest, you'll
have a chance to win a Hammerhead 12-inch Figure, 'Star Wars:
A New Hope' DVD, and a box of movie theater popcorn!

EA Investors Betting Against Star Wars: The Old Republic
Electronic Arts is going all-in with Star Wars: The Old Republic,
investing a reported $300 million in the BioWare-developed MMO and
taking on all of the game's marketing, distribution, and publishing
responsibilities. And according to one analyst, EA's investors are
doubtful the publisher's massive bet will pay off.
In an interview with Gamasutra, Janco Partners analyst Mike
Hickey said a number of factors are contributing to investor anxiety
over Star Wars: The Old Republic. Namely, the last two MMOs EA published,
Warhammer Online and All Points Bulletin, were flops; the industry's
shift to a free-to-play model; and World of Warcraft's MMO market
dominance.
"We believe many investors are betting against SWTOR achieving
market success, provided the company's and industry's track record
at releasing successful new MMOs," Hickey told Gamasutra.
Hickey added that "a suspected subscription pricing model
versus a market that is quickly transitioning to free to play, generally
modest previews of the game and elevated development expense and
suspected aggressive royalty to LucasArts" mean shares of EA
will continue to be weighted as investors take a cautious, wait-and-see
approach with SWTOR.
A new Kinect project has attempted to use Microsoft's 3D motion-sensing
camera, a laptop, a holographic video display and a lady pretending
to be Princess Leia to recreate the hologram tech seen in Star Wars.

Lucas'
2012 Theory?
Fact or Fiction? This article
posted at TorontoSun.com
has been the talk of the community the last few days:
Funnyman Seth Rogen was left stunned by a recent
encounter with his moviemaking hero George Lucas - because the
Star Wars director spent 20 minutes telling him the world would
end in 2012.
Rogen was left speechless when Lucas and Steven Spielberg
joined a movie meeting he was a part of - but the encounter has
left him worried his life will be over next year.
He recalls, “George Lucas sits down and seriously proceeds
to talk for around 25 minutes about how he thinks the world is
gonna end in the year 2012, like, for real. He thinks it.
“He’s going on about the tectonic plates and
all the time Spielberg is, like, rolling his eyes, like, ’My
nerdy friend won’t shut up, I’m sorry...’
“I first thought he (Lucas) was joking... and then
I totally realized he was serious and then I started thinking,
’If you’re George Lucas and you actually think the
world is gonna end in a year, there’s no way you haven’t
built a spaceship for yourself... So I asked him... ’Can
I have a seat on it?’
“He claimed he didn’t have a spaceship, but there’s
no doubt there’s a Millennium Falcon in a garage somewhere
with a pilot just waiting to go... It’s gonna be him and
Steven Spielberg and I’ll be blown up like the rest of us.”
Update: He was kidding according to this
Wired.com article who spoke with Lucasfilm rep Lynne Hale.
Walt Disney World president Meg Crofton announced
today the launch date for the reimagined Star Tours experience:
May 20, 2011, "just in time for Star Wars Weekends."
Mark your calendars and set your navicomputers
to Walt Disney World in Florida for this important Star Wars event.
This all new Star Tours attraction will roll out to other Walt
Disney parks on dates yet to be announced. Likewise, the specific
dates for this year's Star Wars Weekends will soon be announced.
What an image that brings to mind! Let me ask you
this though: Putting aside your foreknowledge of Gamorrean Guards,
how would you imagine it? Short and fat probably? Muck all over
its face perhaps? Would it utter a low rumbling oink-oink or a
squeaky one? Just how real does it look to you? What’s your
gut feeling to its image? Get the concept firmly in your mind
and dwell on it for a few moments.
Whatever image your mind concocted, chances are it was a very
tactile image—not some computer-generated puppet. That is
something the Original Trilogy and its contemporaries have over
the Prequels and their flashy cinematic companions. Yes, the latex
and suits were sometimes obvious to more discerning eyes (for
evidence, look at the picture on page 245 of The Complete Visual
Dictionary, and you can clearly see the human skin around the
performer’s eyes). Regardless, these were still creatures
you could touch. Those Gamorrean close-ups could make your stomach
do little turns at the sight of their snotty, slimy snouts—snouts
so gooey they reminded you of that time you had a bad cold and
your tissue ripped in mid-blow.
Let’s see CGI stir up that same icky memory.
For this reviewer, these visceral memories are what make the
Gamorrean Guards iconic. For others, it could be Jubnuk’s
crunchiness when the Rancor took a big bite. Still others may
best recall Rogua’s and Ortugg’s wet gagging and choking
as Luke exercised a glimmer of Dark Side power. Regardless of
the specific memory, what remains constant is that Gamorrean Guards
are icons among the aliens of the Original Trilogy, and expectations
are always highest when icons become collectibles.
Did Hasbro maintain their recent momentum and give this icon
the treatment it deserves, or did their slam-dunk streak hit a
wall? Find out as Yodasnews presents our in-depth look at the
Vintage Collection’s Gamorrean Guard.
Six months before Star Wars was released in
the summer of 1977, the paperback novel was released to a public
that had not yet been introduced to the iconic Sith Lord, Darth
Vader. On the cover of the novel was the Dark Lord’s portrait
by Star Wars concept artist Ralph McQuarrie. McQuarrie’s
design was markedly different from that of the Vader seen on screen.
This limited-edition bronze by Gentle Giant Studios commemorates
McQuarrie’s original vision for Darth Vader, distinguished
by cleaner lines and a distinctive glare. This solid bronze bust
is strictly limited to only 100 pieces worldwide. Weighs approximately
8-10lbs. and measures 8" tall.
Star Wars Pop! Series bobble heads are coming
soon from Funko!
The new Star Wars series, which is inspired by the look of
Funko's Plushie line of ultra-cute and stylized plush and already
includes characters from DC Comics, Marvel, movie icons, and more,
debuts with seven classic trilogy characters: Chewbacca, Darth
Vader, Stormtrooper, Yoda, Han Solo, Greedo, and Princess Leia
(check out the slideshow below for a closer look at each). A second
series is also on deck and will include Luke Skywalker (Empire
look), Gamorrean Guard, Boba Fett, Ben Kenobi, Darth Maul, and
C-3PO.
While these should be shipping in late February, StarWarsShop.com
now has them up for pre-order -- check them out!

West
Wars Action Figures
Action figure customizer Sillof has posted a new
series of Star Wars inspired action figures. His latest creations
are a mash up of Star
Wars and American West:
West Wars is a line of custom figures that
continues my experiment of breaking down Star Wars many elements
and emphasizing them individually. The original trilogy, especially
A New Hope, were influenced by westerns. The dusty small frontier
towns, the seedy cantina, the quick draw shootouts, etc. This
line is intended to be fully western with no other elements. For
further authenticity all the names are actual combinations of
historical lawmen and outlaws of the American West. This line
has been in the works for quite some time. Many of the figures
were started after the Steam Wars line and before the Samurai
& WWII lines were even begun.

Star
Wars Coming to Legoland!
Coming off its best attendance year ever, Legoland
California announced today coming attractions for the 128-acre
park, including a Miniland area devoted exclusively to scenes
from the Star Wars movies. Park officials are hoping the sci-fi
saga will do for Legoland what last year’s new water park
accomplished in less than a year: record attendance. Replicating
six of the most famous scenes in the six Star Wars films with
1.5 million Lego pieces, the new attraction is scheduled to come
to life March 31 in time for spring break.
Although the Star Wars figures and scenes are being
built at a scale designed for young children, some of the 2,000
Lego models will be more than six feet tall.
Known in the Sci-Fi world as, Padme Amidala
or the mother of Luke and Leia Skywalker, Portman played the troubled
Nina Sayers in the psychological thriller Black Swan (in local
theaters now, click
here for showtimes).
Last night, she took home the Golden Globe for
best actress. This was Portman's second Golden Globe but her first
in the Best Actress category. Her performance as Alice, in the
2004 drama Closer, earned her a Supporting Actress Golden Globe.

ARTFX Darth Vader Images!
Thanks to our friends at
Starcase.jp for
the images (Click to see the full size shots)
The character of Mal Reynolds in Firefly obviously
had a bit of Han Solo in him. But that’s not what we’re
talking about here. It turns out that a small replica of Han in
carbonite was on the TV show’s set and occasionally made it
into the broadcast footage.
I was just absolutely gobsmacked when I read about this on
geek with curves yesterday, because I’m usually good at spotting
anomalies like that and because I’ve seen every Firefly episode
at least five times. Here’s one picture (with Han identified
by a red rectangle); you can see the rest in the original
geek with curves post.
As Princess Leia, Carrie Fisher's enemies included
storm troopers, Boba Fett and Jabba the Hutt. These days the biggest
villain in Fisher's life is closer to home: her expanding waistline.
"I'm fat," says Fisher, 54. "All the clothes
in my closet belong to another chick. They have to make a new alphabet
for my bra size."
Jokes aside, as the newest spokesperson for Jenny Craig, the
5'1" (and a ½") actress and author is opening up
about her humiliation over gaining weight – she was 180 lbs.
at her heaviest – and her determination to slim down.

The new episodes of Cartoon Network’s “Star
Wars: The Clone Wars" will introduce some intensely dark characters
who deal with some grim themes, some of which sprang from the imagination
of one of George Lucas’s own: His daughter, Katie.
The 22-year-old opened up to one of the "The Clone Wars"
fans, 10-year-old Kira Simons, about why she decided to go into
the family business.
It turns out that Katie began writing when she was in second
grade, “just little silly poems,” she told her young
interviewer.

Career Sergeant Zim to kill gigantic alien insects in Starship Troopers,
supervised sea creatures to make the perfect sandwich as Mr. Krabs

Wars, Jan. 14 on Cartoon Network.
StarWars.com chats with Brown about his role as the new complex
Clone Wars villain, why he's having fun sharing Star Wars with his

With Star Wars Blu-Ray Release, Kershner Deserves a Nod...
We wanted to post a quick shout out to our admin and webmaster
Mark who recently was selected to be the Philadelphia
Sci-Fi Entertainment Examiner for Examiner.com and has already
starting spreading the Star Wars love in his articles, the below
is an excerpt from his latest article:
News yesterday of the Blu-Ray release of “Star Wars
The Complete Saga” brought to mind the genius that the Science-Fiction
and Philadelphia communities lost late last year with the passing
of Irvin Kershner.
Kershner, who died on Nov. 27, 2010 at the age of 87 at his
home in Los Angeles after a three and a half year battle with
lung cancer, surely would have loved seeing his vision come into
homes as it was intended to be seen.
Kershner is best known as the director of arguably the best
of the six Star Wars films, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.
What Philadelphia residents may not know is that he was a native,
born in the city on April 29, 1923. He also earned degrees at
Philadelphia’s Settlement Music School and Temple University’s
Tyler School of Fine Arts....
...Fans who love the original trilogy but didn't much care
for the new three can only wonder what the Philadelphia native
could have done with them. I think it’s safe to say that
“Little Ani” and “Jar Jar Binks” would
have not been so prominent in a Kershner-directed Episode 1.

Review: Boba Fett (Clone Wars)
Sometimes, it’s best to leave well enough
alone.
A man of few words and few scenes, Boba Fett was an iconic fixture
of the Original Trilogy. The absence of history, dialogue, and
visage gave audiences a predominantly blank slate upon which to
project their own fan-fueled speculations about the man in the
battered green armor. People knew he was cunning. People knew
he was fearless and able to stand toe-to-toe with the Sith. Beyond
that, his backstory was fair game.
Then came Attack of the Clones and the introduction of Jango Fett.
While Jango proved to be every bit as dangerous and intriguing
as his “son”, it also meant Boba had to be explained.
Sadly, Lucas gave us another little kid with little to do but
try to act tough with a pre-pubescent voice. At least his send-off
on Geonosis was a striking image that gave enough motive to logically
connect the young Fett to the man he would become.
And yet…Lucasfilm still couldn’t leave well enough
alone, and they brought Boba back for the climax of Clone Wars
Season 2, a three-episode arc in which the revenge-minded adolescent
sought to assassinate Mace Windu. Any hope of seeing the foundations
of “Classic Boba” rooted in a dark, vengeance-fueled
story arc, however, quickly dissipated. Instead, audiences were
left with an angry little kid who came off as indecisive, soft,
and pouty. Sure, Death Trap had some awesome moments such as Boba
taking out the cruiser’s reactor, but, by and large, we
were simply given a madder version of “Little Ani”!
Nevertheless, Boba remains a major component in bridging the trilogies,
and Hasbro paid near-reverent tribute to the character with their
newest
3.75 inch scale rendition of the young Fett. Based upon his
appearance in R2 Come Home and Lethal Trackdown, this version
of Boba proves to be not only an incredibly detailed and accurate
figure but a powerhouse of poseability as well.
So it is with great excitement and joy that Yodasnews is able
to present you, our dear readers, with an in-depth review of Hasbro’s
Clone Wars Boba Fett action figure. Click below for the full
review.
