Life after OTC!

The Official Site confirms Hasbro's plans for products after the OTC line ends with #38 (not including the StarWarsShop.com exclusive Holographic Emperor.)  Included iin the announcement come the first look at the upcoming Unleashed IG-88.  The new 3.75" figures are: "Sly Moore, Wookiee Senator Yarua, Pablo Jill, Padmé Amidala in ceremony dress, handmaiden Rabe, and Mos Eisley cantina aliens Feltipern Trevagg , Myo and Dannik Jerriko. Naturally, there will be a wave of Episode III preview figures"  There is also confirmation of wave three for the animated Clone Wars figures.  Wave 3 will include Anakin, Grl. Grievous, and ARC Trooper.  As if that weren't enough, the Galactic Heroes line keeps expanding with "Jedi Luke Skywalker (Return of the Jedi) with Gamorrean Guard, Lando Calrissian in skiff guard disguise with Nikto skiff guard, and a Tusken Raider with Jawa. Based on the Playskool X-wing, a new electronic Galactic Heroes X-wing"

It appears there will be plenty to keep us occupied until Episode 3!  Get all the details here!

Last night I found Leia, Han, and Obi-Wan from the vintage original trilogy collection at a Suncoast in El Paso, TX.  The figures are priced $13.00, but if you are having trouble finding them, at Wal-Mart or Toys R Us, you might want to consider a trip to your local Suncoast.  Happy hunting and make sure to let us know, and our forums members, what you find! find

TAKARA BT-05 - The next installment in the Binaltech lineup is the BT-05 Dead End, the first Decepticon of the series.  This figure is a black Dodge Viper and has many upgraded features from the BT-02 Sideswipe - its not just another plain repaint.  Upgraded featurs include:  Full roof and rear glass instead of convertible top, rear spoiler, new rims, updated hood, new rear end panels, and trim along the bottom of the entire car body - Dead End definitely has an 'Evil Decepticon' look to him!

TAKARA ROBOTMASTERS - The #01 through #10 RobotMasters figures have arrived - this line is packaged in very attractive packaging and overall is very impressive.  We have relatively low stock and will run out of some items soon, but are working on getting more.  Highlights include the #10 G1 Convoy with DVD - this is the metallic version while the #01 prime is the regular 'anime' paint version.  #11 through #14 are available for pre-ordering now - including an awesome looking Starscream and mini Ape Prime.

"Hello to our loyal Collectors' Club.

Gentle Giant would like to give you a quick update live from San Diego Comic-Con.  Hopefully, you have seen our 6 foot tall Boba Fett “maxi-bust”, our 3 foot tall Clone Wars Yoda maquette, or our newly debuted Han Solo in Stormtrooper Disguise mini bust.  For the moment, we would like to inform you about what is going on with the distribution of our exclusive product  the Luke Skywalker in Stormtrooper Disguise mini bust and Spirit of the Rebellion Bust-Ups 4-pack.  As was originally posted several months ago, our intention was to sell these products on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Unfortunately, Comic-Con officials have instituted a policy that forbids this type of sale on exclusive product and, for the safety of attendees and exhibitors alike, have mandated a raffle system.

Details regarding the raffle system will be posted at Gentle Giants booth (2813H, in the Star Wars Pavilion) during the show.  Raffle tickets will be handed out, free-of-charge, at the start of the show, and a drawing will be held in the afternoon for winning tickets.  Winning ticket holders will be able to redeem their tickets for purchase of the appropriate exclusive.  Unique tickets will be handed out for each exclusive.  Additional measures will remain in effect, such as badge punching and 1 per person limit.

Regarding distribution of the exclusives at Wizard World Chicago and to our Collectors Club through our online store, all previous announcements are still in effect at this time, but are subject to change per the whim of show management.

Comic-Con Update!

The Official Site gives an update to what type of coverage they will have of Comic-Con 2004.  For Hyperspace members there are some pictures that include the second cantina three pack, in OTC packing, that includes a blue snaggletooth, Ponda Baba, and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Secrets of The Jedi Revealed!

The Official Site announces a new hardcover novel by Scholastic, Inc..  Written by Jude Watson and set for release in March 2005, Secrets of the Jedi tells the story of how Obi-Wan Kenobi resisted his feeling towards a fellow padawan when he was young.  Years later Obi-Wan, his padawan Anakin who is secretly married to Padme Amidala, and that same padawan Obi-Wan had feeling for are in a mission together.  Get all the details here.

Del Rey Leads On To Episode III!

The official site announces a new book by Del Rey.  The hardcover, written by James Luceno, titled Labyrinth of Evil is set for release on January 25.  The book features Anakin Skywalker's first mission as a Jedi Knight.  Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker are following leads to the whereabouts of Darth Sidious.  The book is supposed to star off where the next Clone Wars episodes will end, and will lead readers straight into Episode III.  Read all the details here!

Star Wars Comic Strips!

The official site announces that the Clone Wars stories will spill over to the daily comic strip format.  There will also be more comic strips like reprints of the original comic strips  in the tradition of Archie Goodwin's 1980 daily strip adaptation of Brian Daley's 1979 novel, Han Solo at Stars' End.  Check out all the details and you can discuss this in our forums.

Hasbro Comic Con Update!

First Look: Topps Star Wars Heritage Artist Sketch Cards!

As previously reported, this September, Topps will publish an exciting new card series that encompasses all six Star Wars movies, including a sneak peek at the forthcoming final film, Star Wars: Episode III. Aptly titled Star Wars Heritage, the series is timed to coincide with the eagerly awaited Star Wars Trilogy DVD release.

Special insert cards will also be included with the Heritage series. Collectors can look forward to a new assortment of randomly packed artist sketch cards. Original art sketch cards, seen recently in the Star Wars: Clone Wars card set, proved enormously appealing to passionate art enthusiasts and card collectors.

"I think fans love these cards because they get to hold something original that is so close to the source. It's literally a piece of Star Wars and it's one of a kind," Star Wars Heritage sketch card artist Thomas Hodges explains. "I know that in the series of cards I'm doing, aside from the 'have to have' Luke's, Padmé's and Vader's -- I will throw in the random background Cantina character or a pilot from the Battle of Yavin. Those cards will be the hard ones to get and to me be more exciting. I'm going to love doing them all, but to throw in the random character will be a real treat."

Disappearing Yoda!

It looks like the exclusive spirit bust-ups will continue.  This time the mean, green, Jedi Master machine Yoda is being offered.  Entertainment Earth has the bust-up exclusive with orders of Series 1 bust-ups.  This is the fifth spirit bust-up, in addition to the San Diego Comic Convention exclusive Spirit of the Rebellion 4-pack. Vintage OTC Figures Found!

Go check your local K-Mart now!  I (staff and forum member Lord Chabelo) just found the vintage style Original Trilogy Collection figures at a K-Mart in El Paso, TX.  I found Han Solo x 3, Princess Leia x 2, and Obi-Wan Kenobi x 3.  The figures were $9.99 plus tax.  Just when you thought the Blue Light special was over, it strikes back.  Happy hunting and make sure to let us know, and our forums members, what you find!

"Movie actor Gary Oldman is all set to play his most villainous role till date in the new 'Star Wars' film. The British actor will be seen in the role of the ruthless General Grievous in the latest 'Star Wars' movie, according to Hello magazine. 

Meanwhile, Ewan McGregor, who plays Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi, will have his work cut out when he meets the wicked warrior. "He's part alien and part robot. Grievous is a master strategist and the greatest hand-to-hand Jedi killer the galaxy has ever known," the report quoted producer Rick McCallum as saying. 

Hollywood insiders have said that Gary was chosen for the role by 'Star Wars' creator George Lucas. Gary, however, is no stranger to negative roles and he is famous for his baddie act in 'Harry Potter', 'The Fifth Element', 'Lost in Space' and 'Air Force One'. (ANI)"

Target Slave I Exclusive

Continuing their celebration of the trilogy that started it all, Hasbro will commemorate one of the saga's most intriguing villains with a vehicle exclusive available at Target this fall.

The Slave I gets the Original Trilogy Collection treatment with a new rendition of Boba Fett's classic craft. This Target exclusive starship has a paint scheme inspired by The Empire Strikes Back, includes a Boba Fett figure, eight missiles, and includes such play features as a "secret" multi-missile launcher, an opening canopy that fits the included Boba Fett figure, articulated stabilizer wings for flight and landing modes, pivoting laser cannons and a weapons rack for four additional missiles. Be sure to visit your local Target this fall to get the Slave I with Boba Fett.

Master Replicas Comic-Con Exclusive Confirmed

Reported back in May when Yodasnews.com got a sneak peak at the latest in a great mini-lightsaber series from MR, it was made official today from Starwas.com, check it out: 

 

This year, Master Replicas will offer an exclusive entry in their .45 scaled series of lightsaber prop replicas to Star Wars fans attending San Diego Comic-Con International. The Obi-Wan Kenobi Lightsaber "As First Built" .45 Scaled Replica will be available for the first time in the Master Replicas booth within the massive Star Wars pavilion. A limited number will be available for each day of the convention -- 200 on Preview Night (Wednesday, July 21) and at least 500 each day from Thursday, July 22 through Sunday, July 25. 

 

Each consumer may purchase two at this event. The lightsaber is priced for $38, or two for $75, including taxes. This version of Obi-Wan's classic lightsaber is a painstaking recreation of the design seen in Episode IV, done in .45 scale. It measures 5" long, and is 5/8" in diameter. 

 

The "As First Built" distinction describes the fact that the lightsaber is in pristine condition, and not the battered, weathered finish seen in A New Hope.This replica comes with an individual display stand made of black injection molded plastic, with clear supports. 

 

If you can't make it to Comic-Con, Master Replicas will be attending other conventions this summer, so you may get your chance at one of these events: Wizard World, Chicago, August 13-15; Gen-Con, Indianapolis, August 19-22; Dragon*Con, Atlanta, September 3-6; Comic Con, Dallas, October 23-24.

Vintage Figure Spotlight: Lando Calrissian Images

A former smuggler, and some would say scoundrel, Lando Calrissian was a long-time friend (and sometimes foe) of Han Solo. Known for his sophisticated tastes and overabundance of style and class, Lando owned and ran a Tibanna gas mine on the planet of Bespin. In The Empire Strikes Back, Lando betrayed Solo by striking a deal with Darth Vader in order to lure the Rebel heroes into a trap.

Inspired by the Bespin scenes in The Empire Strikes Back, the vintage Lando Calrissian has improved sculpting and more articulation than the original figure. Dressed in his Bespin attire, Lando is molded in his blue shirt and navy trousers and wears a soft goods cape. With 14 total points of articulation, he has standard articulation at the elbows, wrists, waist, and hips, in addition to 7 ball-joints at the head, shoulders, knees, and ankles. Lando comes with a stormtrooper blaster.

Episode 3: Picking up the Pace.....!

Episode III continues to gain momentum as the May 19, 2005 date looms ever nearer. The next big milestone has been scheduled -- the round of additional photography (also known as "pick ups") that fills in the missing pieces of the current edit of the picture. 

As was done in the previous films, the first round of principal photography is followed by months of editing that generate new angles, scenes, and ideas. These will be captured onto HD in a brief but intense stint of additional photography. 

"We're honing in a second cut of the film for July," says Producer Rick McCallum. Director George Lucas has shown the rough cut to select department heads and close friends, and the evolving edit currently has a number of placeholder animatics that will have to be replaced with new footage. 

Starting August 23 and running through September 4, Director George Lucas will again roll cameras on Episode III, this time in the UK. "We've got two full weeks of shooting," says McCallum. Among the cast members slated to work in that period are Silas Carson, Hayden Christensen, Anthony Daniels, Samuel L. Jackson, Ian McDiarmid, Christopher Lee, Ewan McGregor and Natalie Portman. 

Returning from the Sydney shoot, Creature Shop Supervisors Dave and Lou Elsey will be on hand, as will Costume Designer Trisha Biggar and Supervising Art Director Peter Russell. The rest of the small crew will be mostly new hands. 

"It will be primarily blue and greenscreen shooting. There won't be any full sets, but there may be large set pieces. This round of shooting is mostly just patching holes and providing transitions," adds McCallum. "We do have a whole new sequence with Hayden and Yoda."

 Meanwhile, at ILM work continues at a steadily increasing pace to meet the April 1, 2005 deadline of over 2,000 visual effects shots. Joining the production as a Visual Effects Supervisor is Roger Guyett. His previous projects as VFX supervisor include Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Timeline, Tears of the Sun and Saving Private Ryan. He joins Visual Effects Supervisor John Knoll and Animation Supervisor Rob Coleman . 

"On Episodes I and II, we had three supervisors from the very start, but this time we're bringing them in over time," says McCallum. "Roger will have huge sequences. John Knoll's unit will end up having about 1,000 shots, and I can easily see Roger having 1,000 as well." 

Guyett is currently overseas shooting exotic background plate photography for what will become the Wookiee homeworld of Kashyyyk.

Gentle Giant has announced that Bossk will be the first mini-bust to sport the new "old" look package with the silver and black and window box. Perhaps this will make some MIP collectors who have stayed away from this line jump in now that you can see what you have. But they are just too cool to leave in the box!

On September 21, when it comes time to tear through the shrink-wrap and open the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD, here's what you'll find inside. As described here, the four-disc set is encased in an attractive two-sided package with embossed cover art rendered in platinum for widescreen editions, or gold for full screen editions. Inside, the four discs each feature new artwork for their covers. 

The cover art to each Episode features the same photographic art style found on the already available Episode I and II DVDs, unifying the saga as a whole. The art printed on the disc themselves features poster art from the original theatrical release. The disc art for A New Hope is by Tom Jung, Empire by Roger Kastel and Jedi by Kazuhiko Sano. 

The bonus disc features a new image of Darth Vader, with his eyes serving as a window to the wealth of behind-the-scenes material found on disc four. As the documentaries on this fourth disc delve into the very origins of the Star Wars saga, the disc art fittingly features a very early poster concept by Ralph McQuarrie. 

For those who like their DVD shelves tidy and uniform, the boxed set can be displayed in different ways. The inner box that slides out of the slip case can be placed so that box art faces outwards, or that the individual DVD spines face outward, to properly show the numerical indices of each Episode. Hasbro Update: Exclusives, Multi-Packs, and Vintage Figures!

The celebration of the Star Wars Trilogy continues with new commemorative sets and figures due out this summer and fall from Hasbro.

 

The A New Hope collection features young Luke Skywalker, the wise Obi-Wan Kenobi, and the droid duo, R2-D2 and C-3PO.

 

The Empire Strikes Back collection includes Han Solo, Princess Leia and Chewbacca, as they appeared during their brief respite from Imperial pursuit aboard the Millennium Falcon.

 

The final set, from Return of the Jedi, has a triumvirate of Imperials: Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Vader, the Emperor Palpatine, and an ever-loyal Imperial stormtrooper.

 

This summer, Toys R Us will carry a perfect starter set to re-enact the Battle of Endor in 3 3/4" scale. The Endor Ambush Pack features five action figures (an Imperial biker scout trooper, General Han Solo in his Endor trenchcoat, an Endor Rebel soldier, Wicket the Ewok, and Logray the Ewok) a speeder bike, and assorted weaponry and accessories like blasters, rifles, backpacks, Ewok gears and four display stands.

 

It's the neighborhood bar where you don't want anyone to know your name -- the Mos Eisley Cantina. This summer, Kmart will carry an all new Cantina Aliens Scene Pack, with silver and black Original Trilogy Collection packaging. This scene includes three unsavory characters -- the homicidal Dr. Evazan, the droid-hating bartender Wuher, and the oversized mantis Kitik Keed'kak. The set comes with three sections of the bar and six stools with multiple drinking mugs to recreate the unforgettable watering hole from A New Hope

Vintage Figure Spotlight:  Yoda from The Empire Strikes Back!

The “vintage” Yoda has some exciting new features that distinguish it from the original. The original Yoda came with a u-shaped snake that only worked to hang around his neck; the new Yoda comes with a u-shaped snake that can be coiled around his neck, cane, or arm. In addition, the new Yoda is the first to have leg articulation, which is a difficult design feature to accomplish on such a small figure.

Yoda has 10 points of articulation, including a ball-jointed head/neck and both shoulders. He has angled bicep articulation and standard articulation at the wrists, waist, and legs. Sculpted holding his cane (also known as a gimmer stick), Yoda wears his Dagobah necklace and comes with a soft goods skirt and removable soft goods cloak.

Original Star Wars Fan Club Poster Set Two prized posters, originally offered only to members of the early Official Star Wars Fan Club, are now available exclusively to customers of StarWarsShop.com. Luke Skywalker's X-wing fighter in the Death Star trench was done especially for new fan club members in 1977 by famed Star Wars concept artist Ralph McQuarrie. Rick Sternbach did the art for the 1983 Return of the Jedi renewal kit poster, featuring a large B-wing fighter and many other ships in front of the second Death Star. The posters are approximately 20-inches wide and 27-inches in height. 

Classic, Collectible Pins Revenge of the Jedi pinbacks were manufactured for Lucasfilm before George Lucas changed the film's title to Return of the Jedi. The wearable collectible button measures 2-inches in diameter. "The First 10 Years" button was made for the big Star Wars 10th Anniversary convention held in Los Angeles in 1987. Clone Wars Animated Figures Wave 3?

Following the immense success of the first 20 chapters of the animated Star Wars: Clone Wars micro-series, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Cartoon Network will continue the saga with five new expanded chapters beginning March 21, 2005.

Once again helmed by Genndy Tartakovsky, Star Wars: Clone Wars continues where Chapter 20 left off, but in a new format. Whereas previous installments were just three minutes long, each new chapter will be 12 minutes, promising viewers four times the excitement, adventures and intrigue as they lead into the long-awaited finale to the saga, Star Wars: Episode III.

Tartakovsky, the talent behind the critically acclaimed Samurai Jack and Dexter's Laboratory, will return as director, co-screenwriter and executive producer of the new Star Wars: Clone Wars animated mini-series. Cartoon Network will air the new chapters from March 21 to March 25 with limited commercial interruptions. These new installments are planned to appear online to members of Hyperspace: The Official Star Wars Fan Club.

The first twenty chapters -- still available for download to Hyperspace members -- featured such fabled characters as Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Padmé Amidala, Mace Windu and Anakin Skywalker in the ongoing battle of the Army of the Republic against a vast uprising spearheaded by the Separatists and their massive droid armies. Chapter 20 introduced viewers to General Grievous, military leader of the Separatist armies, and a major character in next year's Star Wars: Episode III. The new mini-series will include an expanded role for Grievous.

"We were really impressed with the quality of the animation and the storytelling abilities that Cartoon Network and Genndy brought to the first Star Wars: Clone Wars episodes, and clearly viewers were, too, because the feedback we received about the micro-series was fantastic," said Howard Roffman, President of Lucas Licensing. "This new mini-series will bring even more depth and excitement to the story of the Clone Wars and will lead viewers right into the adventures of Star Wars: Episode III."

"It is a tremendous honor for Cartoon Network to have been selected by Lucasfilm to produce these new Star Wars stories, because the Star Wars saga is one of the most popular and successful entertainment properties in the world," said Jim Samples, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Cartoon Network Worldwide. "Genndy thoroughly enjoyed the collaborative relationship we built with Lucasfilm during the production of the first Clone Wars episodes, and is terribly excited now to be entrusted with furthering the storyline and working with such popular and enduring characters.
