Robot
Chicken Star Wars II Now Online!
If you missed it on Sunday (or just want to see it again
like we did) you can now view the entire special online at
Adult Swim. Click
here to check it out!
Yeah, you read right -- we're actually giving
a shout-out to the sadly misguided "Star Wars Holiday
Special". Why? Because as fans of all things Star Wars,
we think every aspect of that faraway galaxy is worthy of
some love, even if that means tough love. And with the "Holiday
Special" turning 30 this week, we thought it deserved
a bit of charitable coverage, seeing as how its older, smarter,
more successful brother -- A New Hope -- was given its own
three-continent 30th anniversary Celebration convention and
all.
Original November 17, 1978 ad for the specialFor
those who have never seen the "Star Wars Holiday Special",
it was a two-hour variety show that many feel suffered from
over-extended scenes, kitschy dialog, and cheesy special
effects. Airing just once on the night of November 17, 1978,
it definitely had a few wince-worthy moments -- Wookiee grandpa "Itchy" fawning
over the seductive crooning of singer Diahann Carol; a sappy
Han Solo getting all mushy over Chewbacca's wife and kid;
and the chef d'oeuvre -- Princess Leia singing "The
Life Day Song" to the strains of the Star Wars theme.

DS. We review both these new releases.

Review:
Princess Leia Organa – Jabba’s Slave
Ever since “Slave Leia” graced
theater screens back in 1983, the minds and walls of teenage
fanboys have been branded with images of a young Carrie Fisher’s
slender body. To this day, it remains the quintessential
Princess Leia costume, and legions of female fans often parade
across convention floors with gold metal bikinis. Even television
personalities and celebrities get in on the fun. Some notable “Slave
Leias” include G4’s Olivia Munn at Celebration
IV, Jennifer Aniston on an early episode of Friends, and
Melissa Joan Hart at a Halloween party several years back.
Naturally, licensees have capitalized
on this outfit’s popularity with a multitude of collectibles.
Hasbro has done 3.75 action figures and 12 inch dolls. ACME
Archives released an animated character key. Gentle Giant
crafted a highly lifelike 1:7 scale statue, and Sideshow
Collectibles recently jumped into the fray with a massive
polystone Premium Format statue.
Today’s review examines Kotobukiya’s
vinyl model of Princess Leia Organa (Jabba’s Slave),
the first version of the character to exude a distinctively
Eastern anime style.

The
Clone Wars Battles its Way to Wii and Nintendo DS
LucasArts today announced the release of Star
Wars The Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels for Wii and Star Wars
The Clone Wars: Jedi Alliance for Nintendo DS.
Star Wars The Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels, developed by
Krome Studios exclusively for Wii, delivers fun-filled Lightsaber;
battles for the entire family while it immerses players in
the characters, locations, and epic duels from the hit animated
series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which airs Fridays on Cartoon
Network in the U.S. Built from the ground-up for Wii, Lightsaber
Duels features an intuitive motion-controlled combat system
that puts the lightsaber weapon in your hand for non-stop
fun.
Star Wars The Clone Wars: Jedi Alliance, developed exclusively
for Nintendo DS by Lucasfilm Animation for publication by
LucasArts, lets gamers experience the awesome power when
two Jedi join forces to fight as one. With an innovative
stylus-based input, controlling the Jedi's movement and engaging
in lightsaber combat has never felt more immersive.
Little hard sticks of pink powdery gum. Wax packs discarded
by the hundreds. Chase cards selling for thousands of dollars.
If these sound familiar to you then you must be familiar
with trading card collecting. This week, Star Wars Action
News explores this great hobby focusing on Star Wars trading
cards, including an interview with Topps Cards discussing
everything from the infamous "dirty" 3PO card to
the upcoming new Galaxies series.
Also this week, we run down this week's Star Wars Clone
Wars DVD release. There are exclusives at Best Buy, Target,
and Wal Mart. What are those exclusives? And where is the
cheapest location to buy the Blu Ray? We tell you on this
week's show.
Plus a discussion of the two new Star Wars video games coming
out this Tuesday, it's all on Star Wars Action News.
For everyone out there who dreams of owning
some serious Star Wars swag, GalacticBinder.com has just
released its list of “Top 10 Most Expensive Star Wars
Items Ever Sold”. All items are ranked in inflation
adjusted 2008 dollars to reflect current value. Think you
know what’s #1?
This week we have some terrific featured pre-orders
and arrivals at Urban Collector. Cool pre-orders include
a new Wonder Woman Statue, Batman Collectibles, Spirit
Movie goodies and Halo Statues. For new Arrivals, we've
received the much anticipated DC 1/6 Scale Joker Figure
(at a great price) and several limited run Star Wars
and Marvel mighty muggs.
Following on from the frankly ludicrous R2D2
Soy Sauce Bottle, the not so quite as ludicrous (and actually
quite cool) animated R2D2 USB Hub and the not at all ludicrous
(and absolutely stunning) R2D2 Radio Controlled iPod Docking
Projection Unit we simply couldn’t pass up on adding
to our R2D2 themed collection with this R2D2 Aquarium.
R2D2 Aquarium is, in case you’re wondering,
far from a tacky affair - though, we’ll admit, it may
well sit comfortably on the fence between the especially
incredulous and the vaguely surreal – as what’s
on offer is a 1¾ gallon tank, an animated dome which
will respond to vocal commands (with beeps) and a radar eye
that doubles up as a periscope allowing you to spy on your
fish as they feed and go about their re-enactments of famous
Star Wars scenes before a suitably illustrated cardboard
backdrop. Additionally, you’ll also find LED ambient
lighting provided which will cycle through a series of colors
(great if your fish are planning a Star Wars themed disco
in their tank to liven up their otherwise wholly dull existence).
The R2D2 Aquarium, which measures in at 30” x16?
x 16?, will set you back just shy of $130 though, personally,
in not keeping any fish we’ll hold out for the Death
Star Kennel as Fido the Wonderdog took to the dark side some
considerable time ago.

New
Hasbro Star Wars Q&A!
Check out the next Yodasnews Hasbro Q&A below!
YN: With a renewed focus on Jabba-themed items and higher-ticket
items (or a combination such as the forthcoming exclusive
Sarlacc and Skiff), what is the likelihood that collectors
will see either a full or partial Jabba's Sail Barge vehicle/playset
in the coming year or two? If it's not currently on the
drawing board, what factors would sway you toward developing
and releasing one.
H: While we have discussed it, there is very little chance
we would ever release this one simply because it has too
many strikes against it. It is not a vehicle that kids
would "vote" for, given a choice between a Sail
Barge and more aggressive vehicles, it would take a massive
development and tooling effort, and it simply is not iconic
enough to command what would be a whopping price point.
If we continue the big vehicle program, there is a long
list of others we would consider before a Sail Barge.
YN: Previous collection lines have run for
approximately a year (Saga Collection, Original Trilogy
Collection, etc.), so what is the projected lifespan of
Legacy Collection and Clone Wars? Will those two merge
into a single unified line when the live-action show's
merchandising appears on the market?
H: There will be a new "line look" starting
next Fall, but the three basic figures lines as we know
them will remain in place at least through Spring 2010.
Legacy and Clone Wars will never merge into a single basic
figure SKU due to the different audiences and composition
of those lines. We don't know anything about live action
yet, so we don't know how we're going to handle it. It
might be it's own line entirely....we just don't know yet.
YN: When determining the success or failure of a product
line, what is the most important source of feedback for
Hasbro (aside from sales numbers) and what is the least
important?
H: Sales numbers tell us only that a line did not meet
our expectations, not *why*. It's important to understand
the why. When a toy or line fails, it could mean that:
our original estimates of the market size were off; the
consumer insights upon which we built the premise of the
toy were unsound; the product did not deliver ultimately
on the original promise; or some other unanticipated factor.
So to understand why a line fails means digging into the
specific especially as it pertains to learning from our
mistakes with an eye toward the future.
