Happy 30th "Star Wars Holiday Special"!

Posted at StarWars.com:

Yeah, you read right -- we're actually giving a shout-out to the sadly misguided "Star Wars Holiday Special". Why? Because as fans of all things Star Wars, we think every aspect of that faraway galaxy is worthy of some love, even if that means tough love. And with the "Holiday Special" turning 30 this week, we thought it deserved a bit of charitable coverage, seeing as how its older, smarter, more successful brother -- A New Hope -- was given its own three-continent 30th anniversary Celebration convention and all.

Original November 17, 1978 ad for the specialFor those who have never seen the "Star Wars Holiday Special", it was a two-hour variety show that many feel suffered from over-extended scenes, kitschy dialog, and cheesy special effects. Airing just once on the night of November 17, 1978, it definitely had a few wince-worthy moments -- Wookiee grandpa "Itchy" fawning over the seductive crooning of singer Diahann Carol; a sappy Han Solo getting all mushy over Chewbacca's wife and kid; and the chef d'oeuvre -- Princess Leia singing "The Life Day Song" to the strains of the Star Wars theme.

Review: Princess Leia Organa – Jabba’s Slave

Ever since “Slave Leia” graced theater screens back in 1983, the minds and walls of teenage fanboys have been branded with images of a young Carrie Fisher’s slender body. To this day, it remains the quintessential Princess Leia costume, and legions of female fans often parade across convention floors with gold metal bikinis. Even television personalities and celebrities get in on the fun. Some notable “Slave Leias” include G4’s Olivia Munn at Celebration IV, Jennifer Aniston on an early episode of Friends, and Melissa Joan Hart at a Halloween party several years back.

Naturally, licensees have capitalized on this outfit’s popularity with a multitude of collectibles. Hasbro has done 3.75 action figures and 12 inch dolls. ACME Archives released an animated character key. Gentle Giant crafted a highly lifelike 1:7 scale statue, and Sideshow Collectibles recently jumped into the fray with a massive polystone Premium Format statue.

Today’s review examines Kotobukiya’s vinyl model of Princess Leia Organa (Jabba’s Slave), the first version of the character to exude a distinctively Eastern anime style.

R2D2 Animated Aquarium with Radar Eye Periscope!

Posted at Nexus404.com:

Following on from the frankly ludicrous R2D2 Soy Sauce Bottle, the not so quite as ludicrous (and actually quite cool) animated R2D2 USB Hub and the not at all ludicrous (and absolutely stunning) R2D2 Radio Controlled iPod Docking Projection Unit we simply couldn’t pass up on adding to our R2D2 themed collection with this R2D2 Aquarium.

R2D2 Aquarium is, in case you’re wondering, far from a tacky affair - though, we’ll admit, it may well sit comfortably on the fence between the especially incredulous and the vaguely surreal – as what’s on offer is a 1¾ gallon tank, an animated dome which will respond to vocal commands (with beeps) and a radar eye that doubles up as a periscope allowing you to spy on your fish as they feed and go about their re-enactments of famous Star Wars scenes before a suitably illustrated cardboard backdrop. Additionally, you’ll also find LED ambient lighting provided which will cycle through a series of colors (great if your fish are planning a Star Wars themed disco in their tank to liven up their otherwise wholly dull existence).

The R2D2 Aquarium, which measures in at 30” x16? x 16?, will set you back just shy of $130 though, personally, in not keeping any fish we’ll hold out for the Death Star Kennel as Fido the Wonderdog took to the dark side some considerable time ago.

New Hasbro Star Wars Q&A!

Check out the next Yodasnews Hasbro Q&A below!

YN: With a renewed focus on Jabba-themed items and higher-ticket items (or a combination such as the forthcoming exclusive Sarlacc and Skiff), what is the likelihood that collectors will see either a full or partial Jabba's Sail Barge vehicle/playset in the coming year or two? If it's not currently on the drawing board, what factors would sway you toward developing and releasing one.

H: While we have discussed it, there is very little chance we would ever release this one simply because it has too many strikes against it. It is not a vehicle that kids would "vote" for, given a choice between a Sail Barge and more aggressive vehicles, it would take a massive development and tooling effort, and it simply is not iconic enough to command what would be a whopping price point. If we continue the big vehicle program, there is a long list of others we would consider before a Sail Barge.

YN: Previous collection lines have run for approximately a year (Saga Collection, Original Trilogy Collection, etc.), so what is the projected lifespan of Legacy Collection and Clone Wars? Will those two merge into a single unified line when the live-action show's merchandising appears on the market?

H: There will be a new "line look" starting next Fall, but the three basic figures lines as we know them will remain in place at least through Spring 2010. Legacy and Clone Wars will never merge into a single basic figure SKU due to the different audiences and composition of those lines. We don't know anything about live action yet, so we don't know how we're going to handle it. It might be it's own line entirely....we just don't know yet.

YN: When determining the success or failure of a product line, what is the most important source of feedback for Hasbro (aside from sales numbers) and what is the least important?

H: Sales numbers tell us only that a line did not meet our expectations, not *why*. It's important to understand the why. When a toy or line fails, it could mean that: our original estimates of the market size were off; the consumer insights upon which we built the premise of the toy were unsound; the product did not deliver ultimately on the original promise; or some other unanticipated factor. So to understand why a line fails means digging into the specific especially as it pertains to learning from our mistakes with an eye toward the future.

If you have a question you would like us to ask, click here to e-mail it to us,

or feel free to post it in our forums You can also find a great archive right here of all questions we have asked from June 2006 to date!

Dark Helmet Lone Positive Force in 'Star Wars' parody!

Posted at Columbusdispatch.com:

No other movie, except maybe The Wizard of Oz, has been as widely spoofed as Star Wars.

Most of the efforts are respectful variations by fans, but the most elaborate was a full-length feature executed with what seemed vaguely like contempt.

That would be the Mel Brooks parody Spaceballs (1987), on display this weekend at the Gateway Theater.

Some of the jokes work -- you have to love a ship traveling at "ludicrous speed" -- but many are obvious burlesque swipes at George Lucas' mega-franchise.

Brooks' affection for Westerns, old horror movies and Hitchcock films -- which helped make Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein and parts of High Anxiety funny -- was replaced by an attitude that he was lampooning Star Wars only because it was so successful.

With one major exception: Rick Moranis' hilarious performance as the dastardly Dark Helmet, a little guy in oversize headgear who gets no respect and less cooperation.

Han Solo in Carbonite Up for Pre-Order!

Hot News from Sideshow:

The Han Solo in Carbonite 12-inch Figure Environment captures every detail of the carbonite slab as Han hung suspended as a trophy on Jabba's wall, motionless and frozen in time. The piece is constructed of highest quality materials, incuding heavy-weight polystone, then hand painted and hand-finished to Sideshow's exacting standards. Han in Carbonite is suspended from the palace wall display using a single pin and magnet system, and can be removed from the wall for additional display configurations. The Han Solo in Carbonite 12 inch Figure Environment is a stunning addition to any collection, and the perfect complement to your Star Wars 12-inch Figure collection.

Building the Star Wars Toys that Never Were!

Check out this great article posted at StarWars.com by Pete Vilmur:

Star Wars fans who were kids during the classic trilogy years of the '70s and '80s probably remember receiving at least one Star Wars toy back in the day -- an action figure that sort of resembled the actor, or a playset tricked out with hokey action features that may or may not have been featured in the film.

Toy collector Nick Macarty remembers those days all too well, and has made a mission out of preserving the classic line's legacy through custom creations inspired by Star Wars toys made famous by Kenner between 1978-1985. Nick likes to create the Star Wars toys that never were but should have been, complete with retro-style packaging that's near and dear to the hearts of old-school collectors.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Blu-ray Review!

Posted at IGN.com:

As busy, broad, and exhaustingly action-packed as the new Star Wars "movie" The Clone Wars is, it would be unfair to both enthusiasts and casual followers to dismiss the project outright as fan service, kiddie fluff or just a classic George Lucas cash-in. As critics have learned with increasing clarity in recent years, the audiences for science fiction and fantasy franchises are both passionate and loyal – perhaps none moreso than for Star Wars – and they deserve a sincere, straightforward and honest assessment of the merits for each new installment... even if that almost inevitably guarantees a deluge of hate mail from folks who disagree.

At the same time, the very fact that critics are often part of that fan base affects their initial reaction, and ultimately, final judgment of a new text's good or bad qualities. But that's also why the most surprising feeling this longtime Star Wars devotee had about The Clone Wars was one of overwhelming uncertainty: The animated opus, culled from a story arc in the forthcoming TV series, is at once a rousing adventure, an effective set-up for the future of the saga, and another story beset by the same character, structural and storytelling problems as the prequels that came before it.

Star Wars Back on Top for Halloween Costumes!

Posted at Wired.com:

More than 30 years after every kid went trick or treating as Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader in one of those sharp-edged plastic masks with the the uncomfortable rubber band, the new hit Cartoon Network series, The Clone Wars, had boys and girls back out there as Captain Rex or Jango Fett.

Much to the chagrin of hard-core, traditional fans who cursed George Lucas' new CGI series and its tie-in feature film as a cheap sell-out to a younger generation, the ratings and retail success of The Clone Wars has Star Wars back on top of the pop culture world, rubbing armored elbows with Iron Man, Batman and other 2008 phenoms.

According to multiple online lists, Star Wars costumes were back in high demand this Halloween as the children of Star Wars-era parents hunted candy door to door in the same (if updated) costumes their folks wore decades ago.

"Star Wars Holiday Special" Topps Cards at StarWarsShop!

Posted at StarWars.com:

For all you Star Wars diehards keeping track out there, November marks the 30th anniversary of the notorious "Star Wars Holiday Special," a somewhat misguided 90-minute variety show that aired just once on November 17, 1978. For anyone who has seen it ("survived" is more like it), it's pretty clear why Lucasfilm has opted not to officially release the special in any way, shape or form for three decades. Basic premise: Chewbacca races home to rescue his wife, son and father from the clutches of the sinister Empire, who invade the Wookiee's home on Kashyyyk searching for any evidence of the Rebellion's whereabouts. Believe us -- it sounds better than it looks.

"The Star Wars Holiday Special" has endured among fans throughout the years, however, circulated first on illicit bootleg videotapes and more recently, DVDs and video hosting sites. The special's lingering appeal can almost certainly be attributed to the show's single redeeming virtue -- an animated short starring the main cast (and voices) of the film: Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), C-3PO (Anthony Daniels), and Darth Vader (James Earl Jones). Most notably, however, the "Star Wars Holiday Special" represents the first wide exposure for Boba Fett, whose character became a driving force behind the marketing of The Empire Strikes Back.

In celebration of "The Star Wars Holiday Special" (or, at least the animated segment), StarWarsShop.com is offering an extremely limited edition series of exclusive Topps trading cards FREE to its shoppers while supplies last! There are 11 cards total, with one card being randomly inserted in all StarWarsShop orders starting today. Because these are random-packed, we hope fans will want to trade the cards with others -- they are called trading cards after all!

Click here to check out the 11 new cards and visit StarWarsShop.com today ro start collecting!

UK Loves Star Wars!

Posted at TechDigest.tv:

In a poll of five thousand people, 38% said that Star Wars was the greatest Sci-Fi movie of all time. Not Wall-E, Close Encounters, or Short Circuit, but Star Wars. Honestly, talk about predictable. Not only that but Darth Vader was voted most evil Villain, the Lightsaber was the most popular gadget and Han Solo is the most heroic sci-fi hero. Okay! We get it! You like Star Wars! Jeez...

In similarly less-than-shocking news, HG Wells was the nation's favourite Sci-Fi author, and Star Trek beat out Red Dwarf and Doctor Who to win best Sci-Fi TV show. They only won because Star Wars wasn't eligible for those categories, y'know.

The whole poll was in honour of a new web sci-fi series, called Kirill, which is only available at msn.com/kirill. If you're a Sci-Fi fan, then go watch it, and maybe stop voting for Star Wars in surveys. It's getting boring now. Vote for ET instead.

Star Wars Action News Update

A few weeks back Star Wars Action News and the publishers of the new trivia book Obsessed With Star Wars teamed up to give away two copies of this book. We had a simple request--tell us why YOU were obsessed with Star Wars. Man, did we get more than we bargained for as the answers ranged from the obvious (Leia is Hot in a Bikini) to the ridiculous (you'll have to listen to find out what...). We read some of the submissions and announce the winners on this week's Star Wars Action News.

We also have Steve reporting from the Collectormania Midlands Convention in the UK, telling us about the latest finds and his encounters with several celebrities at that convention.

Review: C-3PO and R2-D2 (Vinyl Model Kit)

They are the “Odd Couple” from a galaxy far, far away—a gold-plated Felix and a tin-can Oscar. Their relationship a symbiotic one, the duo of C-3PO and R2-D2 are frequently depicted together in artwork and sculpture, and many companies have produced interpretations of the inseparable pair through a variety of media. In the realm of sculpture, however, few pieces have turned out as classy as Kotobukiya’s soft vinyl model kit. Simple in design and standing atop a themed yet simple display base, this kit is among the most iconic-looking pieces in the ArtFX line.

Today’s review takes an extreme close look at this popular two-pack model kit—currently available from TFAW for 50% off their original price

Before we move on, however, something needs to be addressed with regards to Kotobukiya’s claim on the box that these models are 1/7th scale. They are not, and this is noticeable simply by comparing them against each other. Placing either droid next to the Scout Trooper makes the Imperial look like a hulking giant. This is not necessary a detriment to the ArtFX line because each piece (for the most part) is meant to be treated as its own entity. Nevertheless, there are collectors who would want to see their Kotobukiya display have a consistent scale, and they should know that this will not be the case.

And now we can get started.
