J.J. Abrams Tells Us What Will Make 'Star Wars' 'Infinitely Better'

Via MTV.com:

More than a year after announcing a new "Star Wars" for 2015, "Episode VII" officially landed on a December 18 release date. The holiday debut raised eyebrows among fans for two reasons in particular: "Episode VII" would be the first "Star Wars" movie to not premiere in May, and the move came a week after The Hollywood Reporter claimed that Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy had asked Disney to push the release date back to 2016 and was denied.

It was also reported that director J.J. Abrams was "in snyc" with Disney's determination for a 2015 premiere, and when he stopped by MTV News to promote "S.," the book he co-authored with Doug Dorst, Abrams shared that for his part he greatly prefers December over May.

"I will say that it is an infinitely better situation now than when they were saying that they wanted it in the summer [of 2015]," he said. "Before I even came onto the project, they were talking about 2015, and they made this announcement very early on, which I understand. I understand why they'd want that, but it didn't necessarily have anything to do with the reality of where anything was creatively."

It's that last part that Abrams finds so important when it comes to "Star Wars: Episode VII." Not a stranger to the wrath of fanboys, Abrams is placing a priority on quality over meeting early deadlines. "I think that it's a hugely important thing that [the creative process] come first," Abrams said. "A release date is great, but you have to release something great. To me, the new release date is a huge improvement."

So with a later release date, Abrams can focus on the important things, like bringing castmembers from the original series back for a new trilogy. Last week, Lucasfilm announced the first returning character, R2-D2. But before fans make an assumption that one droids requires another, they better check with C-3PO's representation.

"How do you do 'Star Wars' without R2-D2?" Abrams said. "You know, [R2-D2 and C-3PO] have different agents."

STAR WARS: THE APPRENTICE

Star Wars - Official Cufflinks Collection

Via Cufflinks.com:

Cufflinks, Inc. has expanded the collection of officially licensed men’s accessories for the well-dressed STAR WARS fan. A leader in men’s accessories has collaborated with one of the largest licensing franchises in the world to create a collection of STAR WARS Neck Ties, Bow Ties and Pocket Squares featuring iconic characters and insignias chronicling the STAR WARS Saga.
The design team at Cufflinks, Inc. spent months in conjunction with Lucasfilm Ltd. developing a collection of sophisticated men’s furnishings cut from 100% Italian silk to coordinate with the existing and ever popular collection of cufflinks, tie bars and money clips.

“It is an honor to release this exceptional line of furnishings to market. We wanted to capture the essence of the icons of the Star Wars franchise and also maintain a proper elegance fit for menswear,” says Paul Song, Cufflinks, Inc. President. While Yoda, R2-D2 and the Rebel Alliance symbol represent the light side of the Force; the Dark Side is captured in villainous detail as initial designs include Darth Vader and the Imperial symbol, leaving fans to align themselves with their favored side. Additional product extensions are slated for later this year.

The collection features neckties available in both narrow and standard widths as well as bow tie and pocket squares. The STAR WARS Neckwear Collection can be found at department stores and men’s specialty stores nationwide and online at www.CuffLinks.com.

SSC: Imperial Probe Droid Pre-Order LIVE!

Via SideshowCollectibles.com:

Joining the Militaries of Star Wars Sixth Scale collection, Sideshow is proud to present the Imperial Probe Droid. First introduced in the opening scenes of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, this tenacious spy sets intergalactic war back in motion upon locating the Rebel Alliance base, hidden on the icy surface of the planet Hoth.

Displayed hovering atop a museum quality base with an optional snowscape theme, the immense Imperial Probe Droid Sixth Scale Figure is packed with personality. Ominous black ‘eye’ lenses, brilliant light up features, and a ‘squawk box’ loaded with garbled transmission sound effects distinguish the Probot with a dramatic, less than friendly impression. Designed for searching, scanning and sampling, the diligent patrol unit has a wide range of motion with rotating dome, retractable antennae, and fully articulated manipulator arms. Just be cautious when handling; they’re armed with blasters, and in some cases they’ve been known to self-destruct.

Featuring: Articulated legs, Light-up eye, Probe Droid Communication Sound, Blaster with articulation, Extending antennae and Removable sculpted Hoth base 'hugger'
Base with support rod

R2-D2 Is in Star Wars: Episode VII, and He’s Fan-Made

Via StarWars.com:

The first behind-the-scenes photo from Star Wars: Episode VII hit Twitter last Thursday, featuring director J.J. Abrams, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, and a certain blue and white astromech droid — who StarWars.com can now confirm will indeed be in the film. But who are the two men standing behind Artoo, looking very protective of the “overweight glob of grease”?

Meet Lee Towersey and Oliver Steeples, Star Wars fans and members of the worldwide R2-D2 Builders Club. They create fully functioning, film-accurate astromech droids like the R2-D2 seen in the photo, and they’re officially part of the creature effects team for Star Wars: Episode VII. They didn’t apply for their jobs, but still had what is probably the best reference one could hope for.

“It all started when Kathleen Kennedy toured the R2-D2 Builders area at Celebration Europe this past summer in Germany,” says Steeples, who finished his first R2-D2 in 2007, after 10 years of collecting parts and researching. “She posed for pictures with us, looked at all the droids we’d built and was very complimentary. I mentioned that the R2-D2 Builders in the UK were available if required, as a semi-joke. When I was contacted to work on the film by [executive producer] Jason McGatlin, it was on her recommendation.”

EA Not Planning Star Wars Games Based On Upcoming Movies

Via Computerandvideogames.com:

Electronic Arts isn't planning to launch any Star Wars games directly based on Disney's upcoming movies. So said EA chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen during a presentation at the UBS Global Technology Conference on Tuesday, during which he also seemingly revealed that the company's Star Wars licensing deal deal with Disney runs for ten years.

"We've done movie games over the years and we wanted to make sure that we weren't doing a movie game, i.e., game based on the movie," Jorgensen told attendees (via Seeking Alpha).

"The beauty of the Star Wars franchise is that it's so broad and so deep, you don't have to do a movie game, you can do a game that's very focused on the world that's been created around Star Wars.

"We struck what we believe is a fantastic deal which allows us to be able to build games in many different genres across multiple types of platforms over ten years and we'll leverage the strength of the Disney marketing associated with the Star Wars properties both in movies and other things that they may do over the timeframe.

"We'll try to align those with that marketing power Disney has so it will get aligned with timing around the movies, but it won't necessarily be aligned with the movie."

The 16 Most Useless Star Wars Figures in the Galaxy

Check out this hysterical article from Rob Bricken at io9.com (where he takes several digs at collectors, but they are really funny)

A truly preposterous amount of Star Wars toys have been made over the last 35 years; during that time, Hasbro (and Kenner before them) obviously couldn't just keep churning out Luke, Han and Leia figures, so they've made toys of almost everybody who ever appeared in a single frame of the six movies. Here are 16 figures so dumb, absurd and useless only a Star Wars toy fanatic could love them (or buy them).

There Will Be More 'Star Wars' at Disney Theme Parks

Via Moviefone.com:

Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger has been cagey about what, exactly, the theme parks' plans are for the recently acquired "Star Wars" properties. Even at this summer's D23, in the Imagineering pavilion, things were only hinted at without ever being specifically addressed. Rumors persist, however, that both Disneyland in California and Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida will get major "Star Wars"-themed overhauls, with the Orlando plan going into effect long before the "Avatar"-themed land opens at Disney's Animal Kingdom.

In an interview with Bloomberg Media, Iger at the very least confirms that expansion plans are underway. The use of the word "expansion" is telling, because that implies that the rumors of a "Star Wars" overlay for Disneyland's ailing Tomorrowland section of the park are indeed true, as are the plans to devote a large section of Disney's Hollywood Studios to all things "Star Wars." (If the latter is true, it would handily trump Universal Orlando's Harry Potter stuff.)

"The only thing I can share, which actually I don't think we've talked about much, is there is a fair amount of development going on at Disney Imagineering right now to expand the 'Star Wars' presence in California and in Orlando and eventually in other parks around the world," Iger explained, in his patented political way. He then said that the "Star Wars" theme park plans won't be confined to the continental United States. "We do have 'Star Wars' in other theme parks... I think it's likely that Star Wars will be in more than just our two domestic parks."

So, yes, "Star Wars" will have a much bigger presence in both theme parks, probably bigger in the Orlando park because they have the space (basically the current plans are to have this section wrap around the left side of the park, staring at the giant Sorcerer Mickey's hat and encompassing the area between the '50s Prime Time Café and where Star Tours is now). They also need to woo people away from Harry Potter at Universal. But the "Star Wars" overlay of Tomorrowland will be just as ambitious and ballsy, a way to keep the theme of tomorrow alive by visiting a galaxy long ago and far, far away.

While Iger reiterates that the "Star Wars: Episode VII" shift from the summer of 2015 to Christmas 2015 was to accommodate the changing writers' line-up and give the creative team more time to make the best possible movie, it's not hard to wonder how many attractions and rides could be developed and implemented with that additional time...

8 Reasons Why Star Wars Episode VII Is Destined to Please

Via WallStCheatSheet.com:

It’s easy to get excited about the news and rumors surrounding Disney’s (NYSE:DIS) Star Wars Episode VII, but it’s also difficult to narrow down exactly what to expect when the film is finally released. Granted, the film is not scheduled to arrive in theaters until the December 18th, 2015, but that hasn’t kept eager fans from asking whether the newest film in the series can improve upon the mostly disappointing trilogy of prequels.

But, for fans of Star Wars – specifically the original trilogy — every piece of news that has come from Disney and Lucasfilm’s camp seems to be exactly the kind of thing fans want to hear: first, Disney wants to return the series to its fantastical elements; it also wants to have a renewed focus on characters; and director J.J. Abrams agrees on all points.

So, of all the information that has come to light on the new Star Wars trilogy so far, and specifically Star Wars Episode VII, here are eight reasons the new film seems destined to please critics and fans alike...

Major Change to Opening for Episode VII: No Fox Fanfare

Via Yahoo.com:

When “Star Wars: Episode VII” arrives in theaters, it will do so without some very familiar music.

The Twentieth Century Fox fanfare that has started every “Star Wars” film since “Episode IV: A New Hope” will be gone, because Disney bought Lucasfilm last year. It’s an obvious change, but one that only occurred to me with Thursday’s announcement that the next film in the saga will premiere Dec. 18, 2015.

Disney confirmed to me Friday that no, of course it wouldn’t open the film with another company’s logo and music. That means an end to one of the most thrilling, anticipatory moments in movies: the start of a new “Star Wars.” You know exactly what I mean.

The theater goes dark. The drum roll begins: Brrrrrumpum. Brrrrumpum. Brrrrrrrrrrrr-um-pum. The Twentieth Century Fox logo appears, lit up by floodlights. In come the horns. Next appears the Lucasfilm logo, and then, complete silence. A hush falls over the theater, as we see the iconic words:

“A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…”

A pause. And endless pause.

And then, like a dam breaking, the triumphant “Star Wars” main title theme begins, played over a crawl describing the latest exploits of our heroes. If your theater is anything like any theater where I’ve ever seen a “Star Wars” film, it explodes in cheers. I first saw “Star Wars” in a theater as a toddler. The 20th Century Fox theme has such a Pavlovian effect on me that I even get excited at the beginning of bad movies that begin with it.

The fanfare and the “Star Wars” theme were truly made to go together. The fanfare had been almost phased out of Fox productions by the mid-1970s, but George Lucas loved it so much he insisted it be used at the start of 1977's “Star Wars.”

The reason the main title theme seems to complete the fanfare is that it does: John Williams composed the theme in B major — the same key as Alfred Newman’s 1933 fanfare — knowing the Fox anthem would lead into his opening notes. But not anymore.

Via Charlie Owen on YouTube:

This is the official YouTube page for the complete 30 minute, fully restored EditDroid Laserdisc Return of the Jedi raw footage that I recovered and started to release to the Star Wars community on my Facebook page starting October 23 2013. The decision to release the clips piecemeal and watermarked was to try and generate as much publicity as possible so that the community could be involved and to get public opinion on our side for obvious reasons, and of course to put Star Wars back in the news and not just for Episode VII. The plan worked beyond my wildest dreams!

JJ Abrams gives biggest Star Wars Episode VII hint yet

Via Express.co.uk:

STAR Wars Episode VII is the most highly anticipated film of the next couple of years so any little hint that its director JJ Abrams gives is worth listening to. The director, who is notorious for guarding plots, gave his biggest clue yet at what viewers could expect from the upcoming movie.

In a recent interview, he revealed that he agrees with old school Star Wars fans, who believe that the new film, due for release in 2015, should return to its franchise roots.

He hinted at a return to the space-western type feel of the older movies and has vowed to revive their rugged frontier spirit. The move would take the new installment away from the scientific and galactic themes of Star Wars I, II and III.

He also cited the sense of mystery conveyed by the original Star Wars trilogy as key to the success of the movies and something that he would be bringing on.

Abrams said: "If you watch the first movie, you don't actually know exactly what the Empire is trying to do.

"They're going to rule by fear, but you don't know what their endgame is.

"You don't know what Leia is princess of.

"You don't yet understand who Jabba the Hut is."

Last week, Abrams took over scriptwriting duties for the latest film, which he is currently sharing the writing of with Lawrence Kasdan, who co-wrote the Empire Strikes Back.

Harrison Ford On ‘Star Wars’ Sequel: ‘It’s A Work In Progress’

Via Inquisitr.com:

Wherever Harrison Ford goes these days, questions about his involvement with director J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII tend to follow. You have to feel bad for the guy sometimes.

While promoting his latest sci-fi flick Ender’s Game on Today this weekend, host Erica Hill decided to ask the actor about his involvement with the highly-anticipated sequel. Not surprisingly, Ford revealed that he wasn’t in a position to say anything official on the matter.

“Before we let you go, I know you said you would love to reprise Indiana Jones, there’s a lot of speculation about Han Solo. Would you care to entertain any of that speculation?” Hill asked Harrison Ford.

When the actor stated that he simply couldn’t comment on the status of J.J. Abrams’ forthcoming Star Wars sequel, Hill decided to push the issue.

“Okay, so we’ll read into that whatever we want to read into it. How is that?” she asked.

“It’s a work in progress… maybe,” Ford remarked.

Why Lego Star Wars Grows More Popular Every Holiday

Via TwinCities.com:

For the tiny men of Lego, it looks to be a very big Christmas. The classic children's toy -- old enough to be a senior citizen -- has managed to reinvent itself over the decades, and is now more popular than ever.

The Danish company has surpassed Hasbro to become the world's second-largest toymaker, and is gaining on industry leader Mattel, home of Barbie.

While basic Lego bricks are still around, the most popular offerings now are more elaborate and appeal to niche users. There are oversized blocks for toddlers, pastel-colored building kits aimed at girls and programmable Lego robots for teens. Most popular of all are step-by-step construction sets that range from a basic Lego Christmas tree to the 2,989-piece Sydney Opera House.

Then there's Lego Star Wars, perhaps the company's most surprising hit.

Now in its 15th season, Lego Star Wars has become the rare toy line that grows more popular every holiday -- no matter that there hasn't been a new "Star Wars" movie in theaters for years.

"We have sold well in excess of 200 million boxes of Star Wars Lego products since 1999," said Michael McNally, brand relations director for The Lego Group.

But it didn't happen without a fight. Until Lego Star Wars came along, tiny Lego men never were based on specific characters and had never told another company's blockbuster story.

"My understanding was that this was a huge debate within the global organization," McNally said. "You had the camp that said, 'This is amazing.' ... And there was another camp that said, 'Over my dead body, we will not do this, we will never do this.' ... So it was a really contentious point of inflection for the brand."

By then, the U.S. patent for the basic Lego brick had expired, and other toymakers had begun copying the distinctive plastic piece. A licensing deal with Star Wars, one of the top-grossing movie franchises in history, offered some exclusivity.

Thomas Kinkade Paintings Get Upgraded With Star Wars

Via Geekologie.com:

This is 'War on Kinkade', a series of Thomas Kinkade paintings that have been upgraded with Star Wars themes by artist Jeff Bennett. I would proudly hang one of those over a fireplace. Mostly just because I want a fireplace. Hey Indy -- say your line. "Huh?" You know, it belongs in a... "I don't know what you're talking about." Dammit, is this because I asked to borrow your hat and lost it?

MATT BUSCH KICKSTARTER INFO!

Artist Matt Busch has just released a Kickstarter campaign for the long-awaited Hollywood is Dead coffee table art book. Clocking in at 192 pages, the hardcover book will feature the giant collection of zombified parody movie posters that Busch has illustrated over the past five years.

The Hollywood is Dead project began as a series of Star Wars movie poster images at the request of Lucasfilm, only to be repainted by Busch into a twisted undead universe. With fandom hits like Zombie Wars: The Living Dead Strike Back, it was clear that the artist was destined to move beyond Star Wars and into the rest of the iconic cinema classics. The project soon gained attention on G4TV's Attack of the Show and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon as Busch unveiled one new zombified poster after another. Fan favorites include Breakfast at Tiffany's (Breakfast is Tiffany), Edward Scissorhands (Deadward Scissorhands) and Toy Story (Toy Gory).

Busch is already a well-known Star Wars artist, having illustrated numerous posters, books, CDs, and more. While considered parody, these dark and mangled images aren't meant to demean or desecrate the original movie poster greats. "The book is really my love letter to the movie poster as an art form." comments Busch. "The project has let me not only explore my childhood memories, but study my favorite cinema artists' masterpieces. But I'd be lying if I said the zombie aspect wasn't a guilty pleasure, too!"

Details on how the book will be available outside the campaign are not ironed out yet, but Busch assures that pledgers will get the book well before anyone else, and at a better price. The Kickstarter also features exclusive reward packages, like signed / sketched books, and art prints not available anywhere else. Star Wars themed rewards include rare art prints and even original art from the upcoming Star Wars Illustrated trading card series from Topps! The campaign for the Hollywood is Dead art book (only 4 weeks, which is shorter than most) is now live, and will expire on Thanksgiving Day, November 28th at midnight.
