Now Shipping: Limited run STAR WARS Radio Drama

Via Starwarsradiodrama.com:

In 1981, George Lucas’ Star Wars movie script was adapted to meet the special demands and unique possibilities of radio, producing an enhanced, expanded version of the story, with many episodes not seen in the film, adding a significant amount of backstory and a much greater emphasis on character development. As a result, Star Wars: The Original Radio Drama, published by HighBridge Audio, became something that is familiar yet completely new—an exhilarating, deeply satisfying fable for the mind’s eye.

Now, more than 30 years after originally airing on NPR, Topps is commemorating the expanded storyline of this auditory sensation with its new Topps Star Wars Illustrated: A New Hope card series.

HighBridge is celebrating with the release of TWO LIMITED-EDITION, MP3 COLLECTOR’S VOLUMES: Star Wars: A New Hope - The Original Radio Drama, “Light Side” and “Dark Side.”

Building A Giant Star Destroyer...He Is!

Posted at technabob.com:

This dude is building a giant Super Star Dreadnought ‘Assertor’ that is made out of hand-carved styrene and some 3D printing. You know he is serious too. Just look at the state of that room. This is why geeks should not marry until at least age 40. There are just too many cool projects to complete and we make a mess.

Right now, The White Tiger’s project is about 50% complete, but already it looks awesome. This is going to be museum-worthy when it is finished. You can see his Starship Enterprise model in the lower left, to give you an even better idea of the size.

Star Wars: The Old Republic Deleting Abandoned Names

If you play and have not logged in to play in a while, you may want to log in or you risk losing your name, check out the report below from PCGamer.com:

According to an email sent to Star Wars: The Old Republic players, BioWare will soon begin a “Character Name Renewal” program, targeting inactive players. Free-to-play characters who have not logged in to the game for long periods of time will have their names released into the general pool for anyone to use.

TOR saw a big spike in revenue and player activity when it switched from a subscription model to a free-to-play arrangement last year. All of those new players created characters with unique names, so newly-created characters may find themselves having trouble coming up with a name that isn’t already taken. To help combat the problem of low-level characters claiming a name, enjoying (or not enjoying) the game for an hour and then never logging in again, BioWare will wipe away the names of old characters starting on November 12.

Note that Bioware is only flagging characters for renaming. The actual characters, with experience and inventory and dashing good looks, will not be affected.

Subscribers won't have to worry about their characters’ names at all, nor will any character over level 30, no matter what the status of your account is. If you have a low-level character that you’ve been away from for 2-6 months, simply log into your character before November 12 to safeguard your name.

Jedi News is Reporting Harrison Ford Is Back? Hope so!

Via our Force United Partners Jedinews.com.uk:

Now THIS is how you start the new week. The news we've all been hoping for has reached us from the mysterious Jedi Master SQL.

Han Solo, Harrison Ford, is back and onboard for Episode Seven, but that's not all. As part of the deal, steps have been made which raise the possibility of Ford donning the famed Fedora hat of Indiana Jones once more.

A verbal agreement with Ford to play Han Solo once more has been in principle place since before the Disney deal. Over the course of this summer financial settlements were reached. The outstanding points that had dragged on but are now resolved are:

Ford wanted to see the synopsis for his character's development over more than just Episode 7. He saw this in August and is happy with the story arc. Ford wanted a commitment to Indy 5. He did not get this as there is no plot line or script in place. What did happen was an agreement was made wherein an outline would be developed by the end of calendar year 2014, and if all parties can agree to it moving forward, efforts would be made to move on Indy 5 for release before the end of 2016.

Disney wanted a multi film deal with Ford which transcends Episode 7. This has now been agreed.
Exciting news indeed from the Jedi Master. Fans can breath some relief that Han Solo is back, and while we can't quite say Indiana Jones 5 is coming it is exciting that conceptually it's back on the table.

As ever, until confirmed by Lucasfilm, Disney or Bad Robot this is just a rumour, and should be treated as so.

MASTER FILMMAKING TEAM ANNOUNCED FOR EPISODE VII

Via StarWars.com:

As Episode VII continues pre-production, Lawrence Kasdan and director J.J. Abrams have assumed screenwriting duties for the film. Kasdan, who has been serving as a consultant on the film, is a veteran of several classic Lucasfilm productions, writing the screenplay for Raiders of the Lost Ark and serving as co-screenwriter for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Acclaimed director and screenwriter Abrams' credits include Super 8, Mission: Impossible III, Fringe, and Lost.

"I am very excited about the story we have in place and thrilled to have Larry and J.J. working on the script," states Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy. "There are very few people who fundamentally understand the way a Star Wars story works like Larry, and it is nothing short of incredible to have him even more deeply involved in its return to the big screen. J.J. of course is an incredible storyteller in his own right. Michael Arndt has done a terrific job bringing us to this point and we have an amazing filmmaking and design team in place already prepping for production."

Location scouting, production design, casting, and costume design are already underway on Episode VII. A team of gifted artists are working to bring the latest installment of the Star Wars saga, including director of photography Dan Mindel (Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness), production designers Rick Carter (Lincoln, Avatar, Forrest Gump) and Darren Gilford (Oblivion, TRON: Legacy), costume designer Michael Kaplan (Star Trek Into Darkness, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Fight Club),special effects supervisor Chris Corbould (Skyfall, The Dark Knight Rises, Inception), sound designer Ben Burtt (Lincoln, Wall-E, Star Wars: Episodes I-VI), re-recording mixer Gary Rydstrom (Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, Toy Story, Mission: Impossible -Ghost Protocol), supervising sound editor Matthew Wood (Star Trek Into Darkness, The Master, There Will Be Blood) of Skywalker Sound, and visual effects supervisor Roger Guyett (Star Trek Into Darkness, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith) of Industrial Light & Magic. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, with Tommy Harper (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Jack Ryan, Star Trek Into Darkness) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds) serving as executive producers. John Williams is returning to score Star Wars: Episode VII.

Shooting is scheduled to begin Spring 2014 at Pinewood Studios for an expected 2015 release.

LA FRENCH TOUCH: History of French Merchandising 1977-1986

Stephane Faucourt, author of the 'famous' Meccano to Trilogo book released in 2006, and of the recent 'La French Touch - History of French vintage Star Wars merchandising and marketing" book got in touch with us so we could let our readers know about his new book!

The new book is of interest for a broader audience, not just vintage toy collectors, since it covers all the areas of products marketed in France in the 80s, including novels, activities, food, theater related stuff etc... There are two separate editions: FRENCH and ENGLISH ; 244 full color pages, 1200+ pictures. The book is written in a perfect contemporary English; and it's a "Rinzler" style book, in the way it's a literary book which can be read from start to end, it's not just short blurbs/articles about items.

La French Touch, also covers all the toys released in France (viewers, dolls, plush, pre-school etc...), and of course *ALL* the merchandising released in France between 1977-1986 in all various product categories. You can click here or below for more info and to order.

Episode VII Announcement To Mark Anniversary Of Acquisition?

Via Comicbook.com:

There’s been a lot of rumors about Star Wars Episode VII announcements, but the rumor we posted yesterday seems like there could really be something to it. We pointed out that Lucasfilm had posted the Star Wars and the Empire Strikes Back trailer exactly a week apart on their YouTube channel. We speculated that if Lucasfilm released the Return of the Jedi trailer today, it would establish a pattern, a countdown if you will.

Well, Lucasfilm has just posted the Return/Revenge of Jedi trailer, exactly a week after the Empire Strikes Back trailer. So here’s the pattern: Episode IV (Star Wars) on October 9, Episode V (Empire Strikes Back) on October 16, and Episode VI (Return/Revenge of the Jedi) on October 23.

Anyone with basic math skills can figure out the next number in the pattern: Episode VII on October 30, 2013. And what’s so special about October 30? It’s the one year anniversary of when Disney officially announced the Lucasfilm acquisition. What better way to celebrate than finally giving fans the announcement they’ve been waiting for?

We also noticed that Disney has their fiscal full year earnings results webcast scheduled for a little over a week later on November 7, 2013. By making a big announcement on October 30, it would certainly give the executives something really exciting to talk about other than how much money Disney lost on The Lone Ranger. In fact, we daresay that if there’s exciting Star Wars news to talk about, no one is going to care about what happened with The Lone Ranger.

The StarWars.com 10: Best Monsters

Via StarWars.com:

Welcome to The StarWars.com 10, a feature where StarWars.com’s editorial staff huddles to discuss — in a committee — various topics relating to a galaxy far, far away. Today, as it’s that time of year, we pick the best creepy crawlies (big and small) of Star Wars.

Star Wars wouldn’t be Star Wars without monsters. In every film within the saga and throughout The Clone Wars, our heroes have unexpected run-ins with creatures all over the galaxy, making the universe both richer and more dangerous. Whether they’re hiding out in asteroids or slithering in murky waters, monsters play a big role in Star Wars. These are the best.

Note: This list is based on a few things, including creature design, legacy, and overall cool factor. This list does not include sentient aliens, no matter how gross or monster-like they may be; thus, no Jabba, no Salacious Crumb, etc.

Hasbro Sells 1 Million 'Angry Birds Star Wars' Telepods

Via Mashable.com:

Hasbro has sold more than 1 million Telepods, the tie-in action figures for Angry Birds Star Wars II, the company announced Monday.

Telepods allow players to import their favorite Angry Birds Star Wars characters into the game using a phone or tablet's camera to scan a QR code on each base. Players can swap in characters at any point, placing them on the slingshot instead of the default bird.

This game mechanic skirts around microtransactions in a different way. Instead of purchasing packs of extra characters with in-game or real money, players just scan the Telepod one time, and it's in the the game forever. Angry Birds Star Wars II was also the first game that allowed players to put the pigs in the slingshot with the Empire's "Pork Side" characters.

Hasbro's Telepods are sold in packs individually or with larger playsets that players can use without the mobile game. The success can be seen mirrored in other games with add-on toys, like Skylanders and Disney Infinity.

Rovio is capitalizing on Telepods' success and will add them to the next title, Angry Birds Go!. Hasbro his already selling Telepods for that game, which is out Dec. 11. Angry Birds Go! is a departure from the traditional Angry Birds formula as the birds take up carts for a downhill racing game.

Angry Birds Star Wars Revealed as Best New Toy in UK

Via ToyWorldMag.co.uk:

Sales of Angry Birds Star Wars during this period was £5.3m, ahead of second place Skylanders at £4m and third place Monsters University at £2.9m. Angry Birds Star Wars has also taken pole position as the number one licence in the board games category.

According to NPD Group data, over the first seven months of 2013, Angry Birds and Angry Birds Star Wars combined ranked as the 14th biggest licence overall in the big five European markets and 12th biggest overall in the UK. In comparison, one year ago Angry Birds alone was ranked 39th in the big five markets in Europe.

The original Angry Birds sold £4.2m worth of toys in the first seven months of 2012 across the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. The figure for the same seven month period in 2013 had almost doubled to £8.1m. With the Angry Birds Star Wars sales performance of £5.3m added in, in total the Angry Birds licence had achieved combined sales of £13.4m in the seven months to July 2103.

The Latest from DorksideToys.com

What's in stock, available for pre-order, and on clearance at www.dorksidetoys.com

STAR WARS - One of the biggest differences you'll notice if you've never shopped with us is that we offer a 'loose' figure alternative for most lines. You've told us in many cases some of you don't care about packaging (particularly international customers) and just want loose figures shipped at lower postage costs.

Well our Star Wars products have plenty of loose (and carded) options. And with Star Wars figures starting at just over $4 and loose lower shipping costs, now is the time to get completing your collection. We also stock a wide range of vintage collection, and Star Wars Jumbo Gentle Giant which are also in stock, and up for pre-order.

THE WALKING DEAD - The Walking Dead Series 3 kicked off and showed us that this franchise is somewhat 'infectious'. We also got to hang out with The Walking Dead TV Stars and Stan Lee recently at Wizard World-Nashville Comic con. Clearly the show is even bigger than we thought so whilst stock is left, check out all the figures, comics, ten inch figures, vinyl collectibles and more...

DC COLLECTIBLES - Arkham Origins is days away and clearly having an impact on our stock, with lots of collectors taking advantage of the reissue of some older Arkham figures. The smart move would be to hop in the batmobile and check out our batman section kinda quickly as these guys will not last. Lots of 1960's Batman carded figures and collectibles too, along with new 52 DC Super Heroes vs Super Villains figures. To the bat section!

GI JOE - We have great carded GI JOE's starting from a little over $4. And don't let the basic line name mislead you, these guys are still super articulated, come with a stand, and have lots of great weapons and gorgeous card backs. We have many other Joes also, so take a look and choose from Retaliation, FSS, Ultimates or Renegades figures...

MARVEL -Outrageous yellow spandex? Crazy sharp claws? Yep Wolverine Marvel Legends (and friends) are here. We also have Iron Man 3, Marvel Universe & Marvel Select figures. Just about every major superhero is here. Find out more in our Marvel section...

Star Wars News: Arriving Spring/Summer 2014

Paul from our Force United Partners Jedinews.com.uk reports in:

Strap yourselves in, we're about to launch into hyperspace with some HUGE news, and Jedi News brings you it first and exclusively. Let us repeat that, this is confirmed and official - these are all FACTS!

Attendees of the European Brand Licensing Show were given this brochure, and within the magazine was this page detailing Disney's plans for the next two years.

Via the image sent to us by Scruffy Bothan (you'll notice we've highlighted the relevant news) we learn of the arrival of classic LEGO games on mobile platforms in Spring/Summer 2014, a digital library launching in Autumn/Winter 2014, and the continued confirmation that the release of Episode VII is Spring/Summer 2015 but keep reading for the most surprising and exciting news...

This is a page from the Disney brochure given out to the attendees of the European Brand Licensing Show. This is the detailed current calendar plan from Disney for the Star Wars brand. Plenty of little bits of info that will stir much debate and discussion:

  • Star Wars Mobile LEGO games following on from successful app releases of the Batman and Harry Potter platform ports. Coming in Spring / Summer 2014.
  • A Star Wars Digital Library is to launch in Autumn / Winter 2014.
  • Confirmation that the plan remains for Star Wars Episode VII to be released in the Spring / Summer of 2015.
  • But perhaps the most surprising, exciting and fast approaching news is the release of “Darth Vader Themed TV Specials.”
Darth Vader TV Specials - most impressive! Now that you have been able to digest that incredible news, what does it all mean? Our very own Jedi Master SQL will give you his inside take from behind his impenetrable firewall on the Holonet here on Jedi News later.

SWAN 404: NYCC 2013

Via SWActionNews.com:

In just a few years New York Comic Con has grown to have attendance second only to the 40-year-old San Diego Comic-Con. This year had big name stars like Sylvester Stallone, Sigourney Weaver, and more signing autographs, perhaps the highest profile autograph stars at any convention. On this week's Star Wars Action News podcast Marjorie and Arnie report on the Star Wars reveals from Kotobukiya, their exclusive Art-FX+ R2 unit, as well as the other Star Wars collectibles at the con.

But the biggest Star Wars reveals were not at the Javits Center. Hasbro had no presence at NYCC, but they held a private press event the Wednesday before the con and the Star Wars Action News hosts were there. Listen to find out what was revealed, and what wasn't. Plus find out Hasbro's answer to "what's right with Mara Jade?" and news on the notorious Black Series bubble issue.

With an update on all the new toys hitting stores from Johnathan, as well as a Vintage Viewpoint looking back at the Kenner Ewok toys, it's all on this episode of Star Wars Action News!

NYCC 2013: Hallmark Booth

Click below to check out our images from the Hallmark booth yesterday. Hallmark was the most insane line at the con, not so much for the wait (which was long) but the location meant there had to be multiple splits in the line, as many as 5 or 6 and with 200+ people a day was just a nightmare. It didn't help that the Mezco line (at least on day 1) intersected it, and it was also across from the Image booth which was packed every day as well.

Big Star Wars Additions are Coming to Disneyland?

Via IGN.com:

Is Disneyland's Tomorrowland section about to go big on Star Wars? A new report says that's the plan.

A detailed new article at Micechat.com discusses elaborate plans on bringing Star Wars into the original Disneyland park in Anaheim, CA. Below is the relevant portion.

The old Rocket Jets spinner and PeopleMover platform gets an extreme makeover, as a landing pad in the Star Wars spaceport that forms the loose theme for the new land. And what’s a landing pad without a spaceship, right? The craft that will have landed there won’t be any old spaceship however, but will be the famous Millennium Falcon that will act as an elaborate walk-through attraction and meet ‘n greet location for your favorite Wookie co-pilot. In the shadow of the landing pad is the old Tomorrowland Terrace dining facility, made over into the rowdy Cantina on Tattooine where we’d told you previously that those tests in the Golden Horseshoe last month were for an interactive dining/entertainment concept using the Star Wars universe.

The back of the land is where the big new headliner attraction sits, in the place of the existing Innoventions and Autopia. After abandoning previous attempts to utilize the existing PeopleMover track and loading area, the Innoventions building gets gutted and in its place is the pre-show and boarding area for the new Speeder Bike thrill ride. The majority of the track heads outdoors and to the north, demolishing the Autopia freeways and taking over most of that area for the new ride. The outdoor Speeder Bike course is set on the forest moon of Endor where the Ewoks live, and an Ewok village and walk-through attraction will house dining and shops as the Speeder Bike ride zooms nearby. Imagineering has had dueling proposals for this area; one that retains the 1959 looping course of the Monorail and disguises it amongst the forest, and one that cuts out much of that track and shortens the Monorail route to open up more of the Ewok forest visuals.

Yakfinities #50 – The Original Trilogy
From our Friends at Yakface.com - Congrats!

Our first customizing challenge here at Yakface began as a bit of an experiment back in August of 2006 – and here we are now, seven years later, and have hit a bit of a milestone – the 50th Yakfinities Customizing Challenge has begun!

The rules are simple… create any sort of new custom that is inspired by the Original Trilogy… it can be that certain cantina alien that Hasbro just won’t pull the trigger on, an ultimate Luke Skywalker,  something “off screen,” or whatever – the choice is yours.

But this time, rather than the usual random winners, we will also be selecting a Grand Prize winner… which will receive the upcoming Amazon exclusive Droid Factory wave of figures.

Head on over to the forums for all the details after the jump!

Quirk Books To Release Sequels to William Shakespeare’s Star Wars

Via geekosystem.com:

Empire and Jedi are about to get the Shakespeare treatment from Quirk Books and Ian Doescher. Twice more unto the breach, dear geeks!

The sequels will be titled William Shakespeare’s The Empire Striketh Back and William Shakespeare’s The Jedi Doth Return. Striketh back will be released on March 24ty, 2014, with Jedi Doth Return releasing a few months later on July 1st.

Star Wars Episode 7 audition was so much fun

Via Metro.co.uk:

Saoirse Ronan has opened up about her audtion for Star Wars Episode 7 describing it as ‘so much fun’. The How I Live Now actress, 19, confirmed recently that she had tried out for a part and now has revealed that she had a great time.

She told Empire: ‘I have gone in to read for it, and so has everyone else. Anyone could get it. ‘Just to pretend that you have a lightsaber in your hand is like, the most amazing thing.

‘I think it’s the only time where I ever thought, “You know what? Even if I don’t get it, it’s been so much fun to audition for something like this when it’s Star Wars”.

‘It would be so much fun [to get it]. Imagine having a lightsaber and just holding one.’

Saoirse said she had high hopes for the new film, which will be directed by JJ Abrams, but confessed that she would probably have to re-watch the previous films if she was cast.

She added: ‘I think I probably need to watch them again. My friend was addicted to them when he was younger – he had about six lightsabers in his hand at the one time.

‘It’s so exciting they’re remaking it and it’s going to be with JJ, who is so fantastic. It’ll be amazing.’

Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill are expected to reprise their original roles in the upcoming film.
