Quote: | There are dozens of possibilities, not the least of which may be the show's ratings declining. The show itself is, in many ways, an ad for toys so with that in mind, if nobody's watching the show, it's going to dig in to sales. Based on how much stuff still gets made-- we've seen a fair amount of new vehicles and lots of product cycled in and out-- I'm assuming it's doing well enough, otherwise we probably wouldn't be seeing as much as we're seeing. | 1.8 millions viewers for the November 11 episode isn't the best the series has ever had, but it's still better than the overwhelming majority of kids' cartoons. It's doing better than ThunderCats, which is brand new this year and selling plenty of toys. Considering The Clone Wars is the biggest of Hasbro's ongoing action figure lines (at mass retail, not the collector-specific niche to which his company sells), lack of sales obviously isn't the issue.
Retailers want movie-related toys, so that's going to be this year's focus with the 3D release of The Phantom Menace. If the 19 number is limited to what we've seen and just a few more figures, that does seem low, but a theatrical film still explains the shift in strategy. _________________

I, too, was a little skeptical of that claim, especially in light of the fact that Hasbro stated that viewership ratings do not have a big effect on their business decisions (Q&A - 11/2010). And a decline in ratings is normal for a series in its fourth season, right? I believe that your explanation is the better one: there is a movie release coming in 2012, and it is obvious that Hasbro is devoting a large portion of their resources to capitalize on that movie release. And it's not as though this announcement about the animated line came out of nowhere: Hasbro has been stating for about a year now that they are going to be scaling back on character selection for The Clone Wars. I don't think that any of us expected the offering to be as low as nineteen; but it's not as though we weren't given a couple of hints. |

Yep. And even though The Clone Wars is a big hit that fueled a record year for STAR WARS in 2010, the record was for a non-movie year. This is all an experiment for everyone involved, of course. The obvious expectation is that it's a STAR WARS movie, so it will sell plenty of movie tickets and toys. It's a movie that most have already seen, though, and it's also probably the most heavily criticized of the films. So even though 2012 will be a movie year, it won't be a 1999, 2002, or 2005 kind of movie year. _________________

I agree that this is not like a movie release from previous years. Now I could be proven completely wrong, but I doubt this release will generate a huge amount of buzz, since it is a re-release of a film that is one of the least-favorite of the saga; and it is in 3D, a format which has its share of critics. But it may attract a bunch of twenty-somethings who saw the film when they were in their tweens or teens. Despite this, I expect that it will generate the kind of interest that The Clone Wars movie enjoyed: moderate, at best. I have no plans to go see it, since I just purchased the film on BD a few months ago; and I would prefer not to see films in 3D. |

Yakface is reporting that Galactic Hunter and Echo Base News have confirmed the following cancellations for 2012:
Obi-Wan and Fett Deluxe Cancelled
Battlefields of Naboo Battle Pack
On the one hand, I'm pleased because I've felt for some time that the Hasbro line is a bit out of hand and lacks a bit of focus. On the other, I wouldn't mind that speeder thing that comes with Obi-Wan. _________________ "we're mild and green ... and squeaky clean" |

Surprising that this one is being dropped.

I think it's nifty, and I'd have bought at least one for sure. If it's already tooled, there's a strong chance we'll see it somewhere eventually.

I'm gonna start speculating about the remaining five. And, of course, I am working under the assumption that we are only going to get nineteen carded figures in 2012, since Hasbro used the word "total" in their most recent Q&A.
1. Darth Maul
2. Pong Krell (please, please, please)
3. Clone Trooper (501st repaint)
4. Death Watch repack
5. Fives (ARC Trooper repaint)
I also think we might be seeing a repack of armored Savage Opress, since he'll probably be featured in the Darth Maul episode(s); as well as a repack of season three Ahsoka Tano.
Care to predict? |

I like the Wolffe we have just fine, but I wouldn't mind a new one. Odd that Krell isn't included. Think he'll be an exclusive? _________________

My latest prediction for the final five (before this list came out) was: Krell, Maul, Ahsoka, clone, clone. So, I wasn't that far off. I sure as heck did not see the Super Battle Droid in there, that's for sure.
Where's Krell? Some are speculating that he is going to be a convention exclusive; others are saying that he'll be some sort of retailer exclusive, perhaps in a Battle Pack. Time will tell. But you can bet that the next round of Q&As will be lit up with the "Where's Krell?" questions. We'll find out soon enough. |
