“Star Wars” fan helps ring bell for Salvation Army!

Reported at KTUU.com:

Anchorage, Alaska - They are a familiar sound of the season, the Salvation Army bell ringers. But the bell ringer today at the Dimond Center was not your average guy in a Santa hat. He was dressed as a Snow Trooper from “Star Wars” and he's part of a group called the Aurora Borealis Outpost. The group is part of an international organization of “Star Wars” fans whose goal is to give back to the community. So today, the Snow Trooper rang a bell for the Salvation Army. “We figured that maybe we could give something to them in way of service by coming out to ring the little bell and make some money and do some service that way,” said Gary Fife (right), Aurora Borealis Outpost.

Why do 900m People Tune in To Watch this Teenager?

From Timesonline.co.uk:

It began as a schoolboy lightsabre demonstration filmed as a prank. But Ghyslain Raza, known as the Star Wars Kid, has topped the world’s “viral video” chart, with an internet clip being viewed 900 million times. The boom in viewing homemade video clips, forwarded over the internet and posted on sites such as YouTube, has created a new breed of overnight stars.

Ghyslain, a 15-year-old Quebec schoolboy, was none too pleased to see the footage made public. He is seen swinging a mock light sabre; a clip that has earned him cult status, and which can be seen tonight in a UKTV G2 series devoted to the phenomenon, Totally Viral. He is suing his classmates for £140,000...

There's More to Lucas Than Star Wars, You Know!

From Colin Campbell at businessweek.com:

I have never understood the veneration of artists; of their persons I mean rather than of their art. As individuals, great creators can never compete with their best work. The same goes for the bric-a-brac of art; the dull and dusty easels, pianos and typewriters contemplated with awe by culture’s fan-boy clique. So for me, a trip to the Lucas complex does not resonate with the heady idea of art pilgrimage, as it seems to for so many of the faithful. Star Wars was a lovely children’s movie followed up by sequels of greater or lesser magnitude. Its importance has always been in the wild reaction of the public, then and now.

Those grown men swooning giddy at the sight of robots, I think, are in need of analysis or maybe some love. A statue of Yoda seems to me absurd rather than venerable. Darth Vader’s costume is magnificently designed, but I fail to be moved to craven fear by it.

Nintendo DS Review: Lego Star Wars II!

From Matt Paprocki at BCGaming:

Instead of a straight port, LucasArts has created Lego Star Wars II for the DS as an entirely new game. The benefits to creating the game from the standpoint of the hardware is obvious, as the levels fit the screen and the technical aspects without a struggle. On the other hand, you have a smaller team and lower budget to do that task.

Sadly, that's the problem that completely kills this DS rendition. The lack of camera control leads to some issues with this third person adventure (sometimes obscuring key exits completely or making it impossible to see enemies), though that stands out as only one issue in a sea of many. Collecting coins, jumping across gaps, and defeating enemies feels almost exactly like it did on the home console.

Hasbro's next Q&A!

Check out the latest wave of questions we tossed at Hasbro this week.  If you have a question you would like Hasbro to answer in the next installment, you can send it to us, either click here to e-mail your questions to us or you can post your question in our forums!

YN:
The vintage Imperial Dignitary is one of the few figures that hasn't seen the light of day in the modern line. Any hints on when it might surface?

H: It might be a bit of a wait before he gets updated.

YN: I love the Galactic Heroes line and would love to see them in a larger scale. Any chance we would see them in a 4" or 6" scale?

H: We haven't considered that, preferring to keep our product development focused on the main scale.

YN: Are there any plans to make a larger interlocking Star Wars Transformer, where you would need 6 vehicles to make one large giant vehicle, like the Constructicons who formed Devastator?

H: We haven't looked at something this ambitious! It's an intriguing idea, but we're staying focused on delivering core single figures (with the exception of course of the Han/Chewie combiner).

Losin' It!

From EW.com:

In early October, when we first heard that Cinemax would be airing a Star Wars marathon — all six movies in narrative order, from Episode I: The Phantom Menace to Episode VI: Return of the Jedi — senior writer Scott Brown came up with a brilliant idea. Wouldn't it be grand, Scott wondered, if we could find a Star Wars virgin to actually sit through the marathon and write about his or her experience...

Unleashed Order Sixty-Six Mini Review!

Read on for a great mini review from DarthDug:

I picked these four sets up at Target over the weekend. They had a few of the Clones, but only one each of the lightsaber wielders. My quickie reviews as follows - but let me just say upfront that I won't mention paint apps. Anyone whose bought these tiny figures knows paint apps aren't going to be perfect, but they are almost always adequate.

Vader's 501st Legion The "Blue" Clone Troopers: Named after a pair of button-fly jeans and best known as being baby killers has a set of Unleashed now. Four troopers on "urban" bases, these are pretty nifty. Three are shooting and one is standing. Probably because the standing one is holding the rifle and might be front heavy on the base they gave him. They are troopers, not too much to say than that.

Shock Trooper Battalion The "Red" Clone Troopers: According to the back text, supposedly were hand trained by Palpatine and were all over Coruscant. Yet these are on "lava" bases. Probably with "lava reflection" Darth Vader, another Hasbro invention. Oh, sorry, I'm sure they don't make things up. I just must have the wrong copy of the movie. Anyway, these four are all firing, even rifle-guy. So I like this dynamic set. Just wish I could remember when such heavy fighting occurred on Mustafar...

A New Empire: This set includes one static Royal Guard, one "fighting" Royal Guard, a fighting Sith Anakin (with a HUGE billowing robe) and a fighting Palpatine. Biggest gripes: I never saw a Royal Guard do anything but get whipped by Yoda and it's "wrinkly" Sidious, but these sets indicate the Mace-Palpatine fight, not the Yoda-Palpatine fight. He shouldn't be wrinkly yet. Wrinkly, ugly Palpatine didn't wield a lightsaber against Mace. Oh...maybe on the "special-special" edition he did. My last gripe - the two Sith don't have their lightsabers in dualing position but behind them, limiting their posability. Oh, and Palpatine's free hand is too chubby. But the outfits are quite nice - the texture on Sidious' robes is really nice for this scale.

Jedi Masters Set: Includes Kit Fisto, Mace Windu, Saesee Tiin and....a Royal Guard?!? WTF? And it's the same static one in the Sith kit. What the heck happened to Agen Kolar? Was his death just too wussy to include? Mace looks about 20 years too young and is clutching his robe funny with his left hand. But at least his lightsaber is in front of him!

Kit and Tiin are both in nice fighting stances (except for Kit's lightsaber ) EXCEPT, of course, we all know that Sidious wupped their wussy butts in about 1/2 a second. So they never got to demonstrate such awesom-o moves. The Royal Guard sucks and shouldn't be there. Argh! This set upsets me. Three good or at least decent characters and one bad one. Overall? Not too bad. Considering this is only one of the two lines I still sometimes collect from Hasbro, at least the poses are dynamic and they won't take a lot of shelf space up. But where's AGEN???

Loaded with Extras: Sculpting a Galaxy Limited Edition!

From StarWars.com:

Insight Editions / Palace Press continues to redefine just what a book can be with their limited edition of Sculpting a Galaxy: Inside the Star Wars Model Shop by Lorne Peterson. As collectors and fans of Star Wars books can attest, the publishers raised the bar with Dressing a Galaxy: The Costumes of Star Wars, which included in its Limited Edition prop replicas, fabric samples, and a massive clamshell case that made the book truly stand out as a bookshelf marvel. Sculpting goes even beyond that impressive benchmark. The Limited Edition of 3,000 signed and numbered copies comes in a massive tri-fold box, with a die-cut window that exposes a modeled portion of the Millennium Falcon's rear section. This is historically noteworthy as the greeblie-covered hindquarters of the Falcon was one of the models that ILM veteran Lorne Peterson was tasked to create and detail. Opening the book reveals the Falcon's silhouette on the inside cover. A series of magnets keep the tri-fold box sealed.

Crushed Lucas! _UPDATED BELOW!

Yodasnews.com reader Tyson writes in:

The exclusive mail-away George "Crush"us in Stormtrooper disguise figure. I sent away for six total; two before the five sticker restriction was dropped to any five and sent the last four certificates together. Well, as "luck" would have it my first two came and one was slightly crushed; but I forgave Hasbro blaming my mailwoman; until the next four came. Take a look at these... I think there might be a problem with the postal service or maybe the box I paid $4.95 for Hasbro to ship and "handle" it in.

How did George arrive at your home? Let us know!

Update: 11/12/2006: 8 pm EST

Well we asked and over 40 people replied in already, at this points it's about 60% damaged 40% arrived okay, below are a few of the messages that came in today. We are going to contact Hasbro Monday and see if they have some kind of resolution for those with damaged figures and will post when we hear back.

From Hawk: My figure arrived okay. The outside box was damaged but the protective plastic case was fine, as is the figure.

From Tim (member of KSWCC): Mine Too Came Crushed! Not sure what to do.

From Dgerbing: I RECIEVED 2 AND THEY WERE LIKE CASE FRESH!

From Scott from Tusla: ordered three two came in perfect mail boxes but the thirdwas crushed a bit on the box corner. Package inside was fine though.

From Rudy: YES HASBRO made a fraud with Lucas Stormtrooper disguise figure. I bought 2 at ebay, and the users sent me the items very good packing with a lot protection and fast shipping. But Hasbro didn't care about buyers, they sent me one and they didn't use any kind of protection, the white box have a lot of signs and words wrote it by a pen, and a lot of months waiting.

Hasbro's next Q&A!

Check out the latest wave of questions we tossed at Hasbro this week.  If you have a question you would like Hasbro to answer in the next installment, you can send it to us, either click here to e-mail your questions to us or you can post your question in our forums!

YN:
Aside from monetray issues, why is tape used to seal the 3.75" figures to their cardbacks for the ROTS and TSC lines? Will tape be used for the 30th Anniversary line? You do realize that a chunk of your makret is made up of collectors that don't open their figures and tape sealed figures will not do well in posterity?

H: Tape is the only option to seal blisters that wrap around from the front of the package to the back, the aesthetic that we were going to for in TSC. The 2007 basic figure line will be heat-sealed to the front of the blister card like the OTC blisters. The comic packs will continue to sealed with tape around the back of the card.

YN: Will there be any more Vintage Style figures coming back again or have we seen the end of that run?

H: There is a wave of vintage figures slated for May '07….stay tuned!

YN: The "re-release" of the 7" Unleashed has not gone well (at least  from what I see here and read on the fansites), Both Wal-Mart and Target have "red-tagged" these down to under $5 and yet they still  sit. Even the resculpts at Wal-Mart sat around for long time. Is it safe to say these are done and only the smaller line will continue?

H: There will be another wave slated for WM in Spring. One of the things we were trying to accomplish with this line is find an additional audience for the figures over and above the collectors who got these the first time around, since the (first) audience didn't get us to where we needed to be to continue the line. After spring, we'll take a look at the program and see if there are future opportunities for Unleashed 7", looking at the volume we released, sell-through rates, etc..

Click here to e-mail your questions! Also, Hasbro will not be answering back questions the Week of November 20th, the week of December 18th and the week of December 25th due to the holidays, but you can keep sending in your questions to us!

2006 PSWCS Charity Toy Drive!

The Pennsylvania Star Wars Collecting Society  is pleased to announce our fourth annual charity toy drive to benefit Garrison Carida of the 501st Legion. Why do we collect Star Wars toys for Garrison Carida? It's because Carida does so many good things with them. You see, Carida distributes these toys when they armor up and visit children's hospitals all around the Mid-Atlantic region. Nothing brings a smile to these kids' faces like going up to a Stormtrooper, getting a hug, and going away with a new action figure.

While many members of Carida donate their own toys to the cause, it's just not enough to cover all the visits they make throughout the year. So they rely on the generosity of collectors like you to give them a toy or two so they can complete their missions. We at PSWCS take great pride in our work to help in the collection effort. This year we've organized three live collection events. The first will be held at the Pittsburgh Toyshow. December 2nd & 3rd at the Monroeville Expo Mart. The second will be held at Toy Cave in Carlisle PA on December 9th. And the final event will be held at Essential Comics in Exeter PA on December 16th. A compliment of Carida troopers will be on-hand for all three events, so please bring your cameras. If you cannot attend one of the events, we also gladly accept donations by mail.

For more information, please visit our Toy Drive page at http://www.pswcs.com/toydrive/

Drawing Clone Wars Animated Yoda!

From StarWars.com:

Ever wanted to draw Star Wars characters and vehicles just like the professional comic book artists? In this step-by-step series, Star Wars artists and illustrators show you how to draw some of the most beloved characters in the saga. Though Yoda was more widely known as a sage instructor who stayed mostly within the Jedi Temple, he saw frontline combat action during the Clone Wars. He led troops into the field atop a loyal kybuck steed, leading the charge against the Separatists.

Star Wars illustrator Otis Frampton explains with these easy-to-follow steps on how to draw Clone Wars Animated Yoda. Steps 1-5 are to be drawn lightly with a pencil. No pen, no dark lines. Finished lines and details will come at the end.

Most Wanted Collectibles News

Most Wanted Collectibles has started implementing a rewards system. It's in it's infancy, so please bare with us if any issues arise. Details can be found on the website under the "Information" Sidebox (look for the MWC Bounty Credits FAQ). Past orders are also eligible and we will slowly be crediting the points from those orders. There are a lot of orders to go through while still processing new orders, so it may take a while for all orders to get credited with MWC Bounty Credits. Most companies when implementing these types of systems DO NOT credit backorders. We are going to be nice enough and do this, so please give us some time to go through older orders. We also still have our Clearance sale going on. It may end soon, but hasn't been decided when. All of the items are in-stock, so will earn MWC Bounty Credits when shipped as well.

Tresob Yr Presents; Yodasnooze #24, TREMORS!

Ever since Episode One, I've been puzzled by the fact that the Jedi feel the need to use communicators. Shouldn't they just be able to telepathically communicate? It certainly seems like a much more secure line of communication than over the airwaves. Still, I suppose even the greatest Jedi would have trouble mastering telepathic voicemail...or telepathic Javascript. After all, I'm sure some Jedi even had trouble mastering actual communicators with all those knobs and buttons...

According to a article on www.moviehole.net. they report that screenwriter Frank Darabont (“The Green Mile”) said  the fourth film was ready to go two years ago  until Lucas decided he didn’t like his script:

Considering Steven Spielberg thought the script was the best Jaunt Indy had had since ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’, it sounds like Uncle George needs his head read. “That was terrifically frustrating”, Darabont said in an exclusive interview with CHUD. “I worked for over a year on that; I worked very close with Steven Spielberg. He was ecstatic with the result and was ready to shoot it two years ago. He was very, very happy with the script and said it was the best draft of anything since Raiders of the Lost Ark. That’s really high praise and gave me a real sense of accomplishment, especially when you love the material you’re working on as much as I love the Indiana Jones films.”

Lucas then came to Darabont and stuck a stake through his script. “Lucas read it and said, ‘Yeah, I don’t think so, I don’t like it.’ And then he resets it to zero when Spielberg is ready to shoot it that coming year, [which] is a real kick to the nuts. You can only waste so much time and so many years of your life on experiences like that, you can only get so emotionally invested and have the rug pulled out from under you before you say enough of that.”

According to NewKerala.com:

Actor Burt Reynolds biggest regret is that he missed out on the role of Han Solo in the classic "Star Wars" series. According to contactmusic.com, Reynolds lost the part to Harrison Ford who was then an unknown actor. But the star does not completely blame himself for the miss saying his agent should also take part of the blame. He said: "I think that has to be the biggest mistake of my career. I blame the agent. Star Wars Action News Update!

What do you do when you buy an item that your significant other doesn't exactly approve of? That's what befalls Arnie this week when he and Marjorie review the three new 30th Anniversary lenticular posters from Star Wars Shop.com He thinks "they pop" off the page, she thinks they make her want new contacts. Listen to their debate, and then tell us what you think in this week's poll of the week in our forums! Also this week, we have our first segment by Nathan P. Butler, author of the Star Wars Tales comic Equals & Opposites, keeper of the Star Wars Timeline Gold, and founder of Star Wars Fan Works, charter member of the Star Wars Action News Book Club, and host of several podcasts. February 2007 Comics!

From StarWars.com:

Dark Horse Comics manages to pack in plenty of action and intrigue in the shortest month of next year with this assortment of comics scheduled for February 2007. In the distant Star Wars future, political relationships are still often delicate constructs -- even more so when the "marriage" is between two longtime enemies. When rightful Emperor Roan Fel reaches out to the remnants of the Galactic Alliance, the stage is set for serious distrust, if not outright betrayal. And to complicate matters, the Sith have dispatched one of their best agents to ensure the failure of the proposed alliance...

Hasbro's next Q&A!

Check out the latest wave of questions we tossed at Hasbro this week.  If you have a question you would like Hasbro to answer in the next installment, you can send it to us, either click here to e-mail your questions to us or you can post your question in our forums!

YN:
The Jedi starfighter toy from Episode 2 featured a 'fight or  flight' action feature that ended up looking remarkably similar to the  Episode 3 Jedi starfighter (notably the TIE fighter-esque wings that folded up and down)...was the design of the Ep 2 toy reflective of  some sort of unused Lucasfilm concept sketch or was the Ep 3 fighter something of an homage to the Hasbro design or a little of both or neither?

H: The feature for the toy version was proposed by Hasbro. We were looking to develop an “off camera” feature that would play-up the fact the vehicle was a “fighter”. Something that, when deployed, would give the vehicle a formidable appearance. We proposed that the jettisonable body panels (increased firepower reveal) and the opening wings would add visual interest and expand the designs “toyetic” appeal – while maintaining the vehicles “on camera” authenticity. The intent was to add a cue hinting at original TIE Fighter - to give a glimpse into to things to come – helping to tie (no pun intended) the Jedi Fighter to the classic design. We are not aware of any ILM concept sketches that depicted opening wings. Our understanding is that the EPII fighter did influence the EPIII design.

YN: Will we ever see another run of Clone Wars Animated 3 3/4 Figures?

H: If we do more of the Cartoon Network Clone Wars figures, we'll be focusing on realistically styled figures.

YN: I love the Darth Tater T-Shirts on the Hasbro site and the one for sale on HasbroToyShop.com and was wondering if you thought of a  roll-out of shirts based on the figures and vehicles in adult sizes?

H: The Darth Tater shirt was a one-time program developed with Disney, so it's doubtful we'll do something similar.

Medicom's Shadow Stormtrooper Exclusively at StarWarsShop!

From StarWars.com:

Shadow Stormtrooper. Borne from an obscure reference in an old 1979 Star Wars comic strip, these dark agents of the Empire, also known as Blackhole Troopers, have taken on a quasi-cult following among collectors in recent years. The cool, sinister reverse color scheme might have something to do with this, but its limited availability as an exclusive has also made it an elusive prize -- Gentle Giant's recent Shadow Stormtrooper Mini-Bust was an instant sell-out, while StarWarsShop's exclusive Bust-Up and Hasbro action figure were also quickly snatched up by collectors.

StarWarsShop continues the tradition of the Shadow Stormtrooper exclusive by offering the first large-scale full-figured version of the evasive stealth soldier from Japan's Medicom company. As the latest Star Wars release in their fully-articulated Real Action Heroes line, the Shadow Stormtrooper will only be officially available in the U.S. through StarWarsShop, and quantities are limited. This will be a one-time import just for StarWarsShoppers, so be sure to grab yours before the enigmatic dark trooper recedes once more into the shadows. Make sure to check out StarWarsShop's other Medicom exclusive, the Real Action Hero Stormtrooper!

ACME 4 Key Character Key Set and Shaak Ti!

From Chris at ACME:

I hate to do this and I wanted to be sure before posting anything, but there will be a delay on the release of Shaak Ti. Rather than tomorrow, Nov. 1st, we are looking to release it (and the 2nd Character Key Set) on Friday, November 10th. We do apologize for this, but it is for a number of reasons which we feel make this the right thing to do. First of all, we would like to give Mike/Razor's Edge a little more time to be the only place selling a key. Asajj is approaching sellout and it would be great to see that happen before we introduce Shaak Ti.

Additionally, we are still having some issues with our website, which is making us reluctant to start taking orders. We think we pretty much have things worked out, but until we know for sure, we don't want to put out a key and have it present problems for our customers.
